Just a quick update on this –
I tried at Romford but they said they were unable to add the child discount and that I had to go to an underground station or, to be certain, a travel centre. So we went to the travel centre at King’s Cross but it was closed on a Monday! However a very helpful member of staff at the ticket gate was able to add it at a ticket machine so it was all sorted.
