National rail fares, caps and travelcard are due to rise in less than 4 weeks time. While the news that TfL are holding single fares is great, the balance between whether to use oyster / contactless or a paper ticket will change, particularly for stations outside zones 1-6 which face the 7.9% uplift in 1 day travelcards. Have TfL / TOCs indicated when the new fares and caps will be available?
Some questions that I have:
Which single fares will still go up? Any where NR TOCs get a share of revenue (e.g. Liverpool St. to Stratford)? Or just outside zone 6? What about NR within zone 6 (e.g Moorgate to Hadley Wood)?
Regarding caps beyond z6: Will they mirror the new travelcard prices or will they not be increase by the 3% travelcard surcharge?
I’m expecting it will be advantageous to pre-buy paper tickets for many journeys involving NR or to split journeys at the z6 boundary or interchange station.05/02/2024 at 19:37 #5359Mike (admin)KeymasterHi Adam,
Sadly the govenment’s (Department for Transport) desire for secrecy has spilled over into TfL this year so that the Mayoral Decision with the new fares did not include the NR single fares as usual. I find this mind-numbingly frustrating. I hope that this is the last year we have to suffer this treatment.
What is known is that virtually all TfL fares are frozen, including the lines out of Liverpool Street. Fares to Brentwood and Shenfield will rise, as well as Watford Junction and west of West Drayton to Reading.
Single fares set at the NR rate and NR-T rate will rise in line with the general regulated increase, but exact details of rounding are not yet known. Outside zones 1-6 I expect that caps will still be aligned with the new travelcard prices. I don’t know for certain yet though.

And lots more people interchanging at places like Bounds Green, Ealing Bwy, W Ruislip, Balham, Woolwich, Upminster etc. Also Cheshunt and Watford Jn if Overground fares are held.

Adam: Watford Junction fares will not be frozen.

https://tfl.gov.uk/campaign/new-faresNow to decide whether to get a travel card or PAYG… Downside of PAYG is that my credit card hates it, and constantly declines suspicious duplicate TfL pending holds and daily cap transactions… which leads to regular double-charging as TfL claws back unpaid fares
08/02/2024 at 13:01 #5368AdamParticipantHopefully the single fare finder will be updated with the new NR fares and the caps beyond z6. I wonder how they’ll handle Cheshunt and Watford Junction where there’s a mix of Overground and NR. Similarly Reading or Shenfield with the EL.

Adam: Cheshunt fares appear to be frozen. This is probably because GA are compensated for charging TfL fares over that line. Fares for Watford Junction will be increased in line with National policy, as will fares to stations beyond West Drayton and to Shenfield.
I hope the single fare finder does get updated soon, though I fear that the DfT have told TfL not to do so.
09/02/2024 at 23:29 #5370AdamParticipantLooks like GA is a bargain compared to GN. I travelled from Hertford N. to Kingston yesterday via Willesden Jn. avoiding zone 1 at £4.45 (with railcard). From Hertford E. it’s £3.85. The difference will only get wider … at least until LO is allowed to take over the Moorgate lines from GN.
11/02/2024 at 01:34 #5373Mike (admin)KeymasterThe fares from Hertford North seem to be a bit muddled. The same default fares are charged for travel to Camden Road, Blackfriars NR and East Croydon. It doesn’t seem to matter whether you avoid zone 1 or not, as long as you don’t change to the Underground. It might be worth asking GTR why this is.
Also, even if LO take over the Moorgate services don’t expect fares to change beyond zone 6.
