ParticipantHello, I appreciate the detailed website. Just a quick question on maximum journey times applied when avoiding zone 1. I recently made a journey from Canary Wharf [DLR] to Hanger Lane, wanting to avoid zone 1 I travelled via Stratford and Shepard’s Bush (Touching the pink reader at Stratford). Upon completing the journey, I discovered that I had been charged the maximum fare as I apparently didn’t tap out for my journey from Canary Wharf and didn’t tap in for my journey to Hanger Lane. I suspect this is because I exceeded the maximum journey time for the zones I travelled through, however, I find this strange since TfL recommends this journey on its single fare finder. Would I be successful if I launched a complaint with TfL? I hope you can shed some light on this issue.
(The image I’ve hopefully managed to attach shows the timings and taps of the journey from TfL’s journey history website.) Here’s a link just in case: https://imgur.com/a/LArfeo4

ModeratorHi,
My understanding is that where multiple routes exist the maximum journey time is the one which applies to the most zones involved. In this case that would be 2-1-2-3. As that is within zones 1-3 we use the top table on the Maximum Journey Times page. For a weekday that allows 110 minutes. Sadly you took 111 minutes.
Give the helpdesk a call and I’m sure they’ll refund the extra charges. If you make the journey again I’d suggest using the Jubilee line instead of the DLR as it’s likely to be slightly quicker.

ParticipantThanks a bunch for your advice, called TfL this morning and they were happy to refund the extra charges.
Just wondering how you accumulated such an in-depth knowledge of the fare system. Was it just through your experience and observations or some kind of insider knowledge? That’s just my curiosity sneaking through.
Thanks again, your website is a truly amazing resource.24/10/2021 at 19:12 #3593Mike
ModeratorGlad you got it sorted. It’s a mixture of experience, FOI and contacts.
