It’s been a while since any updates have been posted here, but today there might be a few all at once.
Firstly, Matt Dickinson has noticed that LU ticket machines (POMs) are being rolled out with an upgrade. When you touch your Oyster with a travelcard loaded on the pad it offers you a list of stations. Alongside each one it says whether your travelcard covers the journey or whether you can use PAYG, and it then offers the ability to top up. It also lists some stations outside the Oyster area where presumably it will sell you the required extension ticket from the boundary of your travelcard.
Matt reports that some of the fares appear to be wrong (Potters Bar) or missing (St Albans). I’ll hopefully get a chance to try one of these out in the near future, but it seems to be tied in with the aspiration to close ticket offices.
I’d be very interested in any reports from site visitors who might use this feature.
Which tube stations has the updated machines? If you know
Sorry, I don’t have any details.
At the moment, only Chancery Lane has POMs with the new screen layouts. They are being trialled there before a wider rollout. Some of the functionality of the Chancery Lane machines is not yet complete, for example the Travelcard extension fares. The inclusion of incorrect extension fares has been brought to Transport for London’s attention.
Thanks Matt!
Thanks Matt I’ll be making a special trip to Chancery Lane!
I have a paper Zones 1-4 annual gold travelcard purchased at Fenchurch St Station. If for instance I wish to travel to a Zone 6 station, say Epping. The ticket office at Upney, my local underground ststion say they can’t give me an extension and I will have to buy a ticket for the whole journey or a one day Travelcard.
I am sure this is not right but it has happened to me twice now.
Surely they can provide me with a paper ticket from boundary Zone 4 to Zone 6?
Hi Kyle,
I believe they can do this where the destination is a National Rail station, but not if it is another Underground station. Your cheapest way would be to get off at Woodford and touch in on Oyster. When you next get the travelcard have it loaded onto your Oyster card so you can just use PAYG for extension journeys without needing to get off at the boundary.
The new ticket machines are available at West Ham and Whitechapel now.
Thanks for the heads up.
Hi, I have a zone 1-4 travelcard (not Oyster card). It is for a Saturday. Unfortunately it should be for zone 1-6 because my daughter needs to get off at East Croydon and this is in Zone 5. Can anybody help me and tewll me what she needs to do to be able to travel to East Croydon. Can she get an extension ticket in the morning or id this not possible?
Hi Nicky,
Is this a one-day travelcard or a travelcard season? If it’s one day then it should be zones 1-6 because the only paper travelcard for zones 1-4 is the anytime version required Mon-Fri before 0930. The zones 1-6 off-peak travelcard is the same price as the zone 1-4 anytime one – £12.00. If it’s a travelcard season then all she needs is a boundary zone 4 to East Croydon return which can be bought at Victoria before travel.
