Chris HeinParticipant
Morning,
I’ve now found and filled in the form on the TfL website and also attached the screenshot that I took showing the 50 minute delay from Real Train Times.Just a waiting game now 🙂
ChrisChris HeinParticipantI finally managed to get a chance to call the TfL helpdesk. Unfortunately, the lovely person I spoke to was unable to see the reason why the service delay refund was declined.
She added they can see tube delays but can’t see the details for issues on the Elizabeth Line.
She suspects however that as the daily cap was reached that there may be no refund to pay out.
She suggested to fill a form out online and see if I can find out the exact reason to be sure.Chris
Chris HeinParticipantHi Mike,
No Railcard for me I’m afraid lol
I’ll give the helpdesk a call today and report backChris HeinParticipantHi Mike,
09:30 – 12:18 Woolwich [Elizabeth line] to Chesham £4.80 £29.30
12:18 Touch out, Chesham +£1.60 £29.30
11:02 Touch in, Paddington (Bakerloo, Circle/District and H&C) £3.20 £27.70
10:51 Touch out, Paddington [Elizabeth line] +£3.20 £30.90
09:30 Touch in, Woolwich [Elizabeth line] £6.40 £27.70I copied and pasted it in from my Oyster Account 🙂
ChrisChris HeinParticipantI just checked realtraintimes and that shows the 0933 train that I caught from Woolwich arrived at Paddington 50 minutes late.
Makes it a bit of a waste of time having these service delay refunds if they get mysteriously declinedChris HeinParticipantI applied for a refund of the first journey from Woolwich EL to Chesham and I was surprised to have it declined!
I just checked my itinerary for that trip and it’s as follows
Entry 0930 Woolwich EL
Exit 1051 Paddington EL
Entry 1102 Paddington Underground
Exit 1218 CheshamFare was £4.80 for this journey
I can’t see what the reasoning is behind it being declined. The delay was way over 30 minutes, was due to a broken down train at Paddington and I tapped in and out correctly…
Doesn’t seem to be any way of appealing the decision on the email either 🙁
Chris HeinParticipantMorning,
So here’s an update, My travel plans changed as my friend I was with wanted to go to Heathrow and Chesham.
We used the 51 bus to get to Woolwich and then went through the barriers at 0930 at Woolwich Elizabeth Line with a view to catching the train directly to terminal 5 at Heathrow.
But we hadn’t got to Canary Wharf before we were stuck on this train for an absolute age with the poor driver apologising every few minutes for the delay as something had happened at Paddington
We got to Tottenham Court Road where we were told this train is now only going to Paddington (not stopping at Bond Street either). When we got there we found that all services from Paddington to Heathrow were suspended with the exception of the Heathrow Express – Incredibly, despite this there was no ticket acceptance on the Heathrow Express and passengers were told they’d need to buy a ticket to use it (at a hugely inflated price) so at this point we opted to go to Chesham first using the Circle line to Baker Street and grabbing the Metropolitan line there.
This also was a near disaster as the Chesham train then decided it was only going to go as far as Rickmansworth but there was a second train to Chesham directly behind. (Journey from Woolwich EL to Chesham was 2 hours 48 minutes!)From Chesham we went back to Harrow on the Hill and got the X140 to Heathrow and got the Picadilly line from there back to Hammersmith and changed to a Hammersmith and City train to Shepherds Bush Market for Westfield.
Final leg was from Shepherds Bush on the Central Line to Woolwich – Changing at Bond Street for the Elizabeth line back to Abbey Wood – again due to a 20 minute wait at Bond Street we doubled back to Paddington to get on the Elizabeth Line a stop early and get a seat!!We were capped at £14.90 despite using the bus before 0930
Didn’t get to Theydon Bois as ran out of time with all the delays – the network was definately suffering from some after Bank Holiday blues! 🙂Chris HeinParticipantI think the cooldown timer on buses is between 10 and 15 minutes. If you tap a second time before this it comes up with passback attempted (if you’ve got a bus pass or Travelcard loaded).I imagine a similar message will show for prepay.
There probably aren’t many journeys you could legitimately make with it coming up with passback when it’s a valid journey. I can only think of one that has happened to me but the driver was fine when I explained what I had done lol
Chris HeinParticipantI got my GA smartcard today and I was having a look at the various fares on the app regarding the AAA zones 7,8,9 issue.
I put in Amersham (zone 9) as starting station and Slade Green (zone 6) as destination and it offered me an off peak day Travelcard for £16.20
This ticket shows it’s also available for travel in zones 7,8 and 9However, If I change the destination to Dartford (zone 8), it no longer offers a Travelcard at all (just offers a £26.20 off peak day return instead) despite the fact that the first ticket from Amersham to Z1-6 AAA7-9 at £16.20 should be valid but I suspect will not work the gates at Dartford…
Chris HeinParticipantI believe that the Travelcard agreement is where the revenue from Travelcards is split between the train operating companies and TfL. By withdrawing from the agreement it would mean that Travelcards won’t be valid on TfL services but it opens up the opportunity to introduce a new zonal ticket valid exclusively on TfL services but not national rail which means that TfL would get all the profit from selling that ticket instead of sharing it with the TOCs.
In the 80s there were two tickets, The Travelcard which was valid on just London Transport services and the Capitalcard which had similar validity to today’s Travelcard. Eventually the two were merged and the Capitalcard is no more.
In other parts of the country for example Birmingham have differing tickets depending on which of the three modes of transport you want to use and this is what London may well revert back to.
Chris HeinParticipantAt one point it used to be like that.
I recall the Travelcard only permitted use of the tubes and buses. If you wanted to use National Rail then you’d need a Capitalcard
So I would assume that if TfL did do this then it would probably go back to the old format.
Chris HeinParticipantA one day Travelcard is definitely an option but you may have to put in a journey where it’s the cheaper option to get it.
I think I put a journey in from Slade Green to Upminster returning the same day and I got it no worries.Just looked at my expired tickets and it says Slade Green to London underground z1-6 as my journey
Was same price as Travelcard and I used it all day without issues.
Interestingly, I discovered that despite Southeastern running commuter services into London, you can’t buy an inboundary Day Travelcard on their “key smartcard”
Chris HeinParticipantForgot to add, if you have a Railcard that is valid for when you want to do the challenge, the discount applies to the Travelcard as well.
Chris HeinParticipantMy advice is to get an East Midlands Railway smartcard. It’s free of charge and arrives in a few days
Using their app you can buy a one day Travelcard and load it into the smartcard – which is literally a matter of tapping it on the back of your smartphone.
This removes the issue of worrying about being charged max fares or max time limits for your journeys and gives you the flexibility of having a one day ticket on an Oyster substitute!
Chris
Chris HeinParticipantThought I’d feedback what happened in the end.
So I used the app to top up my wife’s Oyster card by £10 at 1008.
I can now see the journey history online which shows that two hours later at 1208 she boarded a 428 bus but the top up did not go on and took her to a -10p balance so an emergency fare was indeed charged.Fortunately, the top up went on when I was there on the return journey at 1508.
So it seems that sometimes it can be more than two hours for a top up to go on. Lesson for me in the future is to top up the night before to make sure!!!
Chris HeinParticipantThat’s my plan to just go there and top it up manually at a shop. It was an Arriva 428 bus she got first of all so nothing would surprise me if it was faulty lol
03/08/2022 at 23:14 in reply to: Charged same station exit at Waterloo LU and then maximum fare at Bank LU #4088Chris HeinParticipantDid you tap in at the reader at Waterloo at the top of the stairs before you go down to the Waterloo and City line?
I’ve missed this one myself and like you got caught for a max fare at Bank even though I’d tapped all the readers on my journey I had missed the important one at the top of the stairs.
Tfl were great and refunded it without issue.
Chris HeinParticipantOne way of doing this is to use two different Oyster or Contactless cards… Use one for the peak journey and then just use the second card for the off peak part of the trip!
Chris HeinParticipantThanks Mike, it’s useful information to know!
Thinking logically, had the Oyster card been loaded with a weekly or longer bus pass on it then the daily cap would still have been £14.10 for the travel on other modes!
Still must admit, I wouldn’t have fancied trying to get down to Abbey Wood by 5.30am using the bus so it was all worth it in the end 🙂
Chris HeinParticipantI took three buses after being capped at £14.10.
Does this mean that had I taken the same itinerary of journeys but I did the three bus journeys at the start rather than the end of my day that it would still have capped at £14.10 but the £4.95 would have also counted towards the weekly bus cap too?
Seems a bit unfair lol24/03/2022 at 20:43 in reply to: Travelling from Euston to Watford Junction for Harry Potter Studios #3768Chris HeinParticipantJust looking at realtraintimes there are loads of LNWR services from Euston to Watford Junction so easily as frequent as the Overground.
By the way, have you looked at Golden Tours? They do a coach from various pick up points to the Studios including entrance and return trip.
The only downside to that is the coach trip from London is surprisingly quite long but it is then an all in one ticket.Chris
24/03/2022 at 08:19 in reply to: Travelling from Euston to Watford Junction for Harry Potter Studios #3763Chris HeinParticipantMorning again,
Overground trains run at about 15 minute intervals during the day, 7 days a week between the two stations with a journey time around 52 minutes. Thanks Mike, I didn’t realise there were Oyster readers on the LNWR platforms and I went through there on Tuesday (as you know I like to get around!) – guess they’ve done a “Waterloo” where the reader isn’t in an obvious place like on the Waterloo and City line.
Journey time on the LNWR is much quicker at about 20 minutes.

22/03/2022 at 12:02 in reply to: Travelling from Euston to Watford Junction for Harry Potter Studios #3757Chris HeinParticipantMorning,
I can help a little bit here. You won’t be able to use Avanti trains as although they call at Watford Junction it’s a pick up point on journeys from London and set down only on journeys to London. You can use Oyster or contactless on the Overground. There are Oyster readers at both Euston and Watford Junction.
You will need to purchase a ticket to use London North Western trains. They don’t accept Oyster or contactless.
I’m not sure of pricing but I imagine Overground should be the cheapest and you get the benefit of capping.
Chris
Chris HeinParticipantMorning,
I did get a partial refund of £9.85 yesterday and I’ve just tapped in on a 428 and haven’t got any further refunds.
I expected an additional refund of 95p
I’ll email you over a copy of my weeks trips when I get home as then it should have updated 🙂
ChrisChris HeinParticipantI’ve just seen this. The extra journey I made was an additional trip on a 428 for my sins 🙂
