We are visiting London for 2 or 3 days shortly and my wife and I can use contactless for travel but I was wondering about a child (aged 14).
I see you can get a ‘Young Visitor discount’ applied to an Oyster card for 14 days although it doesn’t seem to be widely advertised. Is this possible on an old style Oyster card and can I get this applied at Romford station which is nearest to where we will be starting from?
Thanks for any advice you can give.
It says you can get the discount added at any tube or London Overground station. Romford is served by London Overground so should be ok, but if not then take it to a tube station once you get to London. Although that first journey will be charged at the adult rate, adding the discount will ensure that that days travel is capped at the discounted rate. Any blue Oyster card can have the discount set.
Just a quick update on this –
I tried at Romford but they said they were unable to add the child discount and that I had to go to an underground station or, to be certain, a travel centre. So we went to the travel centre at King’s Cross but it was closed on a Monday! However a very helpful member of staff at the ticket gate was able to add it at a ticket machine so it was all sorted.
Thanks again.
