Hi, the following is my journey history yesterday (8 November, Tuesday). I have a 16-25 railcard discount on my oyster.
1) 10:18 Bus journey, route 423 £1.65
2) 10:35 Bus journey, route U3 £0.00 (Hopper fare)
3) 10:52 – 11:54 West Drayton to Hampstead Heath £1.25 (off-peak Z2-6, avoiding zone 1)
4) 12:10 – 12:41 Belsize Park to London Bridge [London Underground] £1.70 (off-peak Z1-2)
5) 14:02 – 14:33 London Bridge [London Underground] to Stratford £1.70 (off-peak Z1-2)
6) 16:42 – 17:09 Stratford to Camden Road £1.80 (peak Z2-2)The following is my understanding from reading this page (please correct me if I am wrong):
A) Bus journeys count towards any daily zonal cap.
B) Journeys during the evening peak count towards the off-peak cap.So for journeys 1, 4 and 5, I paid £5.05, just £0.05 shy of the £5.10 Z1-2 off-peak cap. I was wondering for journey 6, why was I charged the full peak fare of £1.80? I thought I would be charged £0.05 since the cap would have been hit.
Hi Busong,
You are correct with A and B, but as soon as you went out to zone 6 on a train the zone 1-6 cap is the one that applies. You didn’t reach that cap.
If your Oyster card was a plain blue adult card with no discount entitlement then the journeys would later be run through the back end and you’d get a credit. Sadly the back end only deals with adult fares so you won’t.

Am I right in thinking that if I had done the rail journeys in reverse order and hit the Z1-2 cap first before travelling out to Zone 6, I will only be charged Z3-6 for that final journey?
As you are paying with Oyster with 16-25 Railcard discount encoded instead of contactless, there is no such thing as post hoc extension fare like contactless, you will be considered as capping at z1-6 once you made the journey from/to West Drayton.
Using your hypothetical example, assuming you travel your whole itinerary in reverse order:
Camden Road to Stratford: £1.05
Stratford to London Bridge: £1.70
London Bridge to Belsize Park: £1.70
Hampstead Heath to West Drayton: £1.25
U3 bus: £1.65 (not capped at z1-2 because you went to z6)
423 bus: £0 (hopper fare)
Total: £7.35 below off-peak z1-6 railcard cap of £9.30If you were holding adult Oyster or contactless:
Camden Road to Stratford: £1.60
Stratford to London Bridge: £2.60
London Bridge to Belsize Park: £2.60
Hampstead Heath to West Drayton: £1.90
U3 bus: £1.65 on Oyster (but would be partially refunded later) / £0.90 on Contactless (as you have now reached z1-2 cap with a z3-6 extension fare)
423 bus: £0 (hopper fare)
Total: £9.60 (£0.75 will be refunded on Oyster after two weeks or when £1.50 refund is reached)Hi Busong,

If you had reached the zone 1-2 cap before embarking on a zone 2-6 journey then you’d be charged for the zone 2-6 journey in full. As it happens, in your case that wouldn’t make a difference as the zone 2-6 and 3-6 off-peak fares are the same. As Alan notes above, you would need to have made the bus journeys before the rail journey to West Drayton as well.
