Hi Mike,
Can you please give a definitive answer as I can’t find it anywhere?
I have Apple Pay enabled on my phone for contactless payments registered to my banks debit card.
Can I use my phone to tap in and out for a journey and let my son use my debit card to tap in an out for the same journey with me?
Will it register as two separate transactions on my account or will one payment method cancel out the other?

Can he not use a different card of yours?- This reply was modified 1 year, 7 months ago by Mark Dunn.

I appear to be wrong about the time delay- your card/phone won’t be accepted again until you touch out.
10/04/2023 at 16:05 #4797Adam StandenParticipantThank you for a quick reply.
He is only 14 and doesn’t have his own debit card. We also don’t travel to London enough to warrant paying out for the 11-15 zip Oyster photo card.
It was only to save a measly 10p anyway ????
It’s only a single journey otherwise it would be better to get the child’s one day Travelcard paper ticket.

Doesn’t clarify if the card and phone count as different when they both link to the same bank account.- This reply was modified 1 year, 7 months ago by Adam Standen.
10/04/2023 at 16:09 #4801Mark DunnParticipantMy suggestion was that he use your credit card.
To me the advice is clear: you can’t use the card at the same time as the device with that particular card loaded onto it.
Mike the site owner, may know better, so maybe give him a chance to respond.10/04/2023 at 19:05 #4805Alan (28481k)ParticipantI think Mark Dunn has mistaken what TfL meant by separate cards/devices.
To TfL, they see separate numbers for each card/device as they all have original or virtual card numbers. TfL doesn’t care which account it’s debited to as long as the payment request goes through, as it’s alluded in this paragraph:
If you have a joint bank account, you can usually both use your contactless cards to travel as each card will be charged separately.
10/04/2023 at 19:16 #4806Adam StandenParticipantThank you Alan.
It’s not a joint account with two debit cards. It’s one debit card which I want to use to top in and out and also use the Apple Pay on my phone which uses the same debit card details but in a different form when used from the phone.
It’s nit a big deal, so I’ll just purchase a paper ticker for my son.
Thank you all who have replied.

10/04/2023 at 19:19 #4808Alan (28481k)ParticipantAs I’ve understood the system, you can tap in with card and device at the same time, as long as it’s one person one card/device.
Also note that each card/device does its own capping calculation.
10/04/2023 at 19:29 #4809Adam StandenParticipantThat’s interesting as I can’t register my phone on my TFL account, only bank cards.
How would I track my journey history for both the phone and debit card as they are attached to the same card?
10/04/2023 at 22:15 #4810FeathersParticipantFirstly, it’s definitely necessary for one person to tap in and out with the same “thing” to be charged correctly. Your phone is a “thing” and your card is a different “thing”.
As a result, as far as I know, you should be able to use one of those “things” each to make two separate, simultaneous and complete journeys at the same time. I’ve not tried it but that’s how I understand the system to work.
As far as appearing on a TfL online account, my card simply appeared twice. Once for the card itself and once for the Apple Pay version of the card. (I renamed one of them to make it clear which was which.) As stated above, they’re treated as two two different cards so will each be charged and capped separately even though they end up debiting the same bank account.
11/04/2023 at 14:00 #4813Mark DunnParticipantAlan mentions the virtual (I call it proxy) number given to a card on Apple Pay- the one that appears on statements. If the TfL system can’t see that they’re linked to the same account, perhaps this is enough to make them effectively separate accounts, but that does contradict the TfL advice. Perhaps TfL are trying to offer certainty to phone users.
11/04/2023 at 14:28 #4814FeathersParticipantI agree with Alan – you’re misreading the advice. The card and device are different. One’s a card, one’s a phone.
As long as every individual uses a different item to pay with they’ll be fine.
The account that cards/phones happen to be linked to isn’t something that can be checked at the gate line, that all goes on in the backend processing later on so the gate has no way of knowing anything that may link card and phone to the same owner.

12/04/2023 at 21:11 #4819MikeModeratorNot sure how I managed to miss this thread. I agree with Alan and Feathers. The card and the phone will appear differently to TfL. Sometimes, authorised user credit cards have the same number, and my wife and I managed to travel together using them, and two charges were made.
