I am confused how to get the cheapest fare as listed on TFL fare finder – the so called default fare for £7.20?

    Fares

    Oyster

    Contactless

    Peak : £11.90

Monday to Thursday from 0630 to 0930.

    Off Peak: £7.20

At all other times including public holidays.

    Alternative fares

Changing between National Rail and London Underground at Blackfriars or London Bridge (or Cannon Street, Charing Cross, Victoria, Waterloo or Waterloo East)

    Oyster

    Contactless

    Peak : £14.70

Monday to Thursday from 0630 to 0930.

    Off Peak: £9.90

At all other times including public holidays.

Changing between National Rail and London Underground at Vauxhall (or Battersea Park/Battersea Power Station or Queenstown Road/Battersea Power Station or Elephant & Castle)

    Oyster

    Peak : £14.70

Monday to Thursday from 0630 to 0930.
    Off Peak: £9.90

Changing between National Rail and London Underground at Balham

    Oyster

    Contactless

    Off Peak: £9.90

At all other times including public holidays.

See I need get to Stanstead Airport on June 11th and right now can get an advance Stanstead Express train fare from London Liverpool Street to Stanstead Airport for £15. So thought that might be quicker and nicer than my usual route of Merstham to London Victoria – (also £7.20 off peak via Oyster/contactless) then £11 advance fare on a National Express coach – as had them not stop in past at Victoria BR stop plus bus takes over an hour longer than the train.

So any ideas what that so called cheap default route is as I cannot see it?

    Thanks.

There is no “default” route as such, the listed fare covers every route that doesn’t involve changing at any of the places listed.

So going to Clapham, Overground to Whitechapel and the Liz line to Liverpool Street would be an example (if I read it all correctly).

Yes, that would work Feathers. It’s a bit of a roundabout route though. Merstham to East Croydon to Norwood Junction to Whitechapel to Liverpool Street is probably more direct, albeit with an extra change or two.

“There is no “default” route as such, ” ok but…

“the listed fare covers every route that doesn’t involve changing at any of the places listed.” <— that’s literally what ‘default’ means?!

Thanks guys, will I need tap on any pink readers anywhere or not at these interchanges?

Wondering how long it would take also get to Liverpool Street taking these ‘default / lowest fare’ routes?

So as long as I tap in before 6:30am to start, whole journey will be treated as off peak right?

From reading the above I will need to go Merstham>East Croydon>Norwood Junction>Whitechapel>Liverpool Street.

    Guessing that’s NR>Overground>Underground right?

Yes, peak or off-peak is decided by the time of the first touch in on a journey.
Whitechapel to Liverpool Street can be either Underground or Elizabeth line.

A simple change at Farringdon will do.
