    I think Surbiton is the free boundary- what’s my best option? It’s not at all clear what we need to buy and whether or not we have to get off and back on again.

    Normally you can buy a ticket from any ticket office from the TFL Boundary to Walton (NOTE : Not all machines offer this). However Surbiton is actually the boundary, so Surbiton to Walton is the same price as TFL Boundary to Walton. You can purchase a ticket between any two stastion locations from all ticket offices, and most ticket machines.

    If you purchase a ticket from the Boundary to Walton then the train doesn’t have to stop at Surbiton, however if you purchase a ticket from Surbiton to Walton then the train must stop at Surbiton.

    However virtually all Walton trains stop at Surbiton, so that shouldn’t be an issue.

    Thankyou- I’ve never bought a boundary ticket, so how do I get it out of the machine- can I get a return and will it be the same price as a train operator’s online ticket?

    Very few machines will sell you boundary tickets. They generally have to be purchased from a ticket office

    Returns from the Boundary are possible. The price is often slightly less than a ticket from the last station inside London. However in the case of Surbiton, it’s treated as the edge of the boundary for the mainline, and is the same price.

    This bit isn’t actually true. The 60+ Oyster is a zonal and a season ticket so any additional ticket can be used without the train needing to call where you swap from one to the other.
