I am curious about some odd pricing for off-peak journeys along the C2C via Oyster / Contactless.
A Zone 1 TfL-LU – Chafford Hundred Rail Station / Grays fare is:
Off Peak: £9.00
At all other times including public holidays.I noticed that the Zone 3 – Chafford Hundred Rail Station / Grays fare is:
Off Peak: £5.50
At all other times including public holidays.Therefore if I were to tap out in Zone 3, switch cards and tap back in my fare would be less.
A Zone 1 – 3 TfL-LU fare is:
Off Peak: £3.00
At all other times including public holidays.Therefore the total Journey cost using split-ticketing is:
Off Peak: £3.00 + £5.50 = £8.50
At all other times including public holidays.I thought this may be related to TfL-LU vs NR vs NR-T fare schedules, but this is even the case if I were to switch at another Zone 3 station, other than West Ham, get a TfL-LU service to a station offering C2C services.
In fact if I switch at West Ham which is a Zone 2/3 station the pricing discrepancy gets even larger:
Off Peak: £2.80 + £5.50 = £8.30
At all other times including public holidays.Why is this? It doesn’t seem to be related to TfL-LU vs NR-T, as the fare discrepancy even appears when using TfL-LU services for both journeys, for example switching at Plaistow, or Canning Town.
08/10/2024 at 13:53 #6618Michael TsangParticipantI think this has be to reported to TfL as something like this has happened in the past in Vauxhall, which now have non-standard fares added for interchanging there to prevent anomaly.
c2c is a train company which adopts TfL fare scale so the whole journey should be charged at TfL rate, regardless if there is a transfer to the tube or not.

Thank you. To make matters stranger, Chafford Hundred Rail Station – Fenchurch Street is:
Peak : £7.40
Monday to Friday from 0630 to 0930.Off Peak: £6.30
At all other times including public holidays.Thinking this has to do with the journey being wholly on C2C, I decided to check Chafford Hundred Rail Station – Tower Gateway via Limehouse:
Also the same:
Peak : £7.40
Monday to Friday from 0630 to 0930.Off Peak: £6.30
At all other times including public holidays.Yet, if you pop in Chafford Hundred Rail Station – Bank via Limehouse:
Peak : £10.10
Monday to Friday from 0630 to 0930.Off Peak: £9.00
At all other times including public holidays.08/10/2024 at 15:51 #6621Michael TsangParticipantSorry I have just checked that Chafford Hundred is outside Zones 1-6, so the reasoning in #6618 no longer applies.
In this case, the fares are not on a standard scale and probably set by c2c under guidance from DfT, so loopholes and pitfalls are all around.
There is no longer a general rule involving fares on National Rail outside Zones 1-6, as they are not harmonised like within Zones 1-6.
09/10/2024 at 19:41 #6626MikeModeratorThanks for the input, Michael. Yes, fares which go beyond zone 6/9 do not conform to any pattern. There are other split points like East Croydon on fares from Gatwick Airport and many points on fares from Reading. With the latter one it wouldn’t be possible to use the fast trains if a split was desired.
