ParticipantThe new fare table has been published and most of the fare increase has been placed on journeys outside Zone 1, while the increase for peak hour journeys to/from Zone 1 has been suppressed. A single-zone, off-peak journey outside Zone 1 will increase by 10%. TfL did the same last year as well, resulting in outer London travellers paying for the most of the extra revenue generated by the fare increase.
As a result, I have reduced the number of short Overground journeys I take as the fare I pay is no longer worth the short distance I travel.
Why can TfL get away with such extortionate increases for outer London fares (in the absence of a non-Zone 1 cap), while trying to improve the transport in outer London? How can we place political pressure on it to stop such practice in future years?

KeymasterHi Michael,
It should be noted that the increased fares on TfL routes are still less than the equivalent fares on NR routes, even though the latter have been frozen. It should also be noted that the application of small percentages rounded up to the next 10p mean that all NR short journey fares have risen significantly above inflation since 2015. See https://oysterfares.com/extortionate-national-rail-fare-increases/ for more details.
As for political pressure, perhaps contact your London Assembly member. I’m not convinced that there will be much appetite to do anything as it is all tied in with funding settlements with the government. They might be persuaded to consider asking for zone 2-6 and 2-9 caps again – a move I would certainly support. You could also try contacting your MP.

ParticipantWait. Are the new fares even published yet, and what day do they start? All I can find is press reports with a handful of example fares
I want to renew my annual travelcard, and it’s still showing the old prices one month away (…would I lock in the old price I pay now?!)

The new fares are here.
Travelcard prices and fare caps are frozen because they follow National Rail fare policy.

ParticipantOh excellent news about Travelcards – that’ll make a change to the inflation-busting rises in previous years
Thanks

KeymasterYes, caps and travelcards are all frozen as far as I can see. I’m trying to catch up with various things and will write a bit more about the fares change soon.
