Hi, I’m wondering about this (admittedly strange) itinerary I had taken on the weekend:

    Waterloo NR
Clapham Junction – Change to Mildmay, forgot to tap pink reader
West Brompton – Change to District
    Fulham Broadway

I have a Railcard and was charged £3.55 which is all well and good, that’s the Z1-3 NR-T off-peak railcard fare. I’m guessing since I forgot to validate at Clapham Junction, the route was assumed to go through Wimbledon (Z3).

Why then does the fare finder (both here and TfL) report £3.35, which is the Z1-2 fare? Can the assumed route differ between the fare finder and what’s actually charged?

Under what conditions does the fare finder show the “avoid … via” tip, does that only work for avoiding Zone 1?

This is a strange one. It looks like the default route has been suppressed as the fare finder is only showing the via Putney/East Putney fare. This shouldn’t happen. There will be a default route set, which is probably zone 1-3 as you predict. I’m not sure whether via Clapham Junction and West Brompton would also trigger an alternative. You might need to touch both pink readers.

In general, alternative routes are shown wherever they are set up. It’s certainly not just for avoiding zone 1.
