    Hello

    I have recently purchased an Oyster Pay as You Go Card. I live in Epsom and am currently travelling twice a week from Epsom mainline station to Perivale Underground Station (Central Line) via Clapham Junction and Shepherd’s Bush at Peak times, so usually about 0650 in the morning. I have a disabled persons rail card which a member of TFL staff has attached to my Oyster Card. There are 2 ways to get to Shepherd’s Bush from Clapham Junction, one is to catch a Southern train (my preferred route) and the other is to catch a London Overground train from Platforms 1 or 2 which i’d rather not do as it is much busier than the Southern train.

    I spoke to TFL yesterday about being charged the correct fare, and they advised that I should touch a pink reader at Clapham Junction. The Southern train departs normally from Platform 16, however as I discovered today, the pink reader is located at Platforms 1 or 2. Is there an easier way of making sure that I am charged the correct fare other than traipsing all the way from from platform 16 to platform 1 to tap the pink reader? What would happen if I tapped a yellow reader instead (bearing in mind that i’m not exiting the station at Clapham Junction)? Have TFL advised me wrongly and I don’t need to tap a reader at Clapham Junction?

    I think TfL have misunderstood the situation. There is no difference in charge between taking trains operated by different companies over the same route. The fact that they use different platforms at Clapham Junction is irrelevant.

    For this journey (Epsom to Perivale) the avoiding zone 1 route is defined by changing at Shepherds Bush so you don’t need to worry about doing anything other than changing trains at Clapham Junction.

    Touching a yellow reader would end your journey and could have serious revenue implications.

    Thank you for your reply. Please can you clarify what the pink readers are for, so that I know what to do if my journey requires me to touch one?

    They indicate if you’ve gone via a particular route and are eligible for a different fare. They are generally only needed if you don’t need to change from one station to another (eg NR-LU).
