Hi,
I completed this journey today I’m trying to figure out why I was capped less than I expected…
07:41 Raynes Park –> 08:37 Feltham (£3.60)
08:48 90 bus (£1.75)
17:50 Paddington (LU) –> 18:37 Raynes Park (£5.95 cap)
In total I spent £11.30, however, I expected it to be capped at £11.70. Would be great to know why I was capped lower.
Hi Hazy,
Assuming you have a railcard discount on your Oyster card then you benefitted from a minor bug. The bus journey counted towards the reduced zone 1-4 off-peak cap of £7.70, even though it was before 0930.
Had you not had a discount entitlement then you would not have capped. Your total would have been £12.05 which is below the zones 1-6 anytime cap of £14.90.

Thanks for your reply. I do have my railcard on my oyster card so that’s good to know. Would this bug happen again if I were to repeat this journey again tomorrow, or was I just lucky?

It’ll happen again if you repeat the same journeys. Basically any bus journey counts towards all 3 caps, the anytime rail cap, the off-peak rail cap and the bus cap. It was introduced when weekly capping was first applied to Oyster and it’s never been fixed.

It applies to any off-peak cap. Any bus fare counts towards any rail cap because buses aren’t in zones.
Okay, I’m still trying to make sense of the zone 1-4 off-peak cap of £7.70. Knowing that my railcard had 1/3 discount, I’m unsure why it would charge £7.70 instead £7.80?
The discount is actually 34% and then the result is rounded down to the next 5p. This is to ensure that it is always at least a third off after rounding. If you use the fare finder on this site, or look at the daily caps and travelcards information page, you’ll see what the caps actually are. In the fare finder remember to say you have a National Railcard rather than Adult.

7:30 Raynes Park –> Feltham (£3.60)
8:20 Bus (£1.75)
16:40 Bus (£1.75)
17:00 Feltham —> Raynes Park (£2.70 cap)
Total: £9.80?
Ah no I think I got that wrong, Feltham to Raynes Park will still cost £3.60 as it wouldn’t reach the £9.80 cap from the first touch in on the bus so the total would be £10.70?
Yes, correct the second time. On your original set of journeys you only went to zone 6 in the morning peak, hence the off-peak cap was only zones 1-4. If you return from Feltham that’s zone 6 which costs more.
I see, sorry to ask again but would this scenario work?
07:00 Bus (£1.75)
07:30 Wimbledon –> Paddington (£3.70)
17:00 Paddington –> Wimbledon (£0.85)17:30 Bus (£0.00)
Total: £6.30?

No. The Wimbledon to Paddington journey is in the morning peak so will not count towards the off-peak cap.
It’ll work like this:
Bus: £1.75 towards anytime and off-peak caps.
Train: £3.70 towards anytime cap only.
Train: £3.70 towards both.
Bus: 45p – £9.30 anytime cap reached, £5.90 of off-peak reached but the anytime cap stops it.
