Hi, I have a railcard on an Oyster card so would like to avoid paying the peak cap so I am able to get cheaper fares. I will be flying into Heathrow T5, but on the weekend I arrive the Piccadilly line is partially closed in the city. To avoid the peak fare going straight to zone 1, am I right that I’m able to get the Elizabeth Line to Ealing Broadway and tap out, then return tap in again and get the Central or Elizabeth into zone 1, and will only be charged off-peak? (Will be after 9.30 am)

    Hi Leinad,

Yes you can break your journey like that. Note that there’s no peak fares at a weekend apart from those to or from Heathrow. Also note that even if you pay a peak fare from Heathrow you will still be limited by the off-peak zone 1-6 cap of £9.80. So if you do any further travel in London later that day it might actually not make a difference.

    Hi,

I will be doing further travel in London on the same day, so just to clarify, if I get the Elizabeth line direct to zone 1 in the morning I will still only be charged at the off-peak cap at the end of the day? There’s just some confusion as it says the Elizabeth Line from Heathrow costs £12.80 at all times which is more than the off-peak cap.

    Thanks for your help

With a Railcard the Elizabeth line costs £8.70 off-peak, which is all day weekends. In any case, caps always override single fares. That does mean that sometimes a single fare will never be charged. If you change the card type to National Railcard/Gold Card in the fare finder you’ll see the railcard prices.
