Fare Finder Upgrade

After waiting over 3 months for updated zonal data, TfL have finally supplied the latest file. Sadly there is no movement on providing the correct data for journeys involving the Project Oval contactless extensions, but I have now corrected the display such that these journeys will be described as covering zones 0-16.

The bigger news is that the fare finder now has a new name. Welcome to South East Rail PAYG Fare Finder, acknowledging that more and more fares relate to the expansion of PAYG throughout the South East Rail network. It still lives at the same URL, but the emphasis is changed to the wider scope. When you request fares for a journey beyond the Oyster area you will now be warned that Oyster is not valid for this journey, in a slightly more prominent way than before.

Other pages explaining PAYG in a more relevant way for the wider National Rail network will be coming soon. Watch this space.

    • Hi Keith,

Contactless PAYG cannot be combined with travelcards or 60+ Oyster cards or Freedom Passes. You have to touch in and out at each end.

  1. Fares from Charing Cross to Dartford with my Senior Railcard during Monday to Friday Evening Peak.
On your site you show £9.60 no discount.
On br fares it shows £6.35 and Oval £3.75
    Oyster POP fares show £3.75
On the South Eastern website for travel on the 17.31and 17.36 departures it shows £3.75
I am somewhat confused. Are you able to clarify.

    • Hi Len,

That’s opened up a can of worms.

When using an Oyster card with a railcard discount attached there is no discount on peak fares (unless it’s a disabled railcard). What my fare finder and indeed the TfL single fare finder show is what you will be charged in that instance.

Now, as for brfares, the PAYG entries in that database are not to be relied upon as they are not linked in any way to the TfL database. They are provided for information purposes only. Also, Dartford is not part of Project Oval as it is in zone 8 and already accepts Oyster as well as contactless. I don’t know why Oval is being mentioned there, perhaps they are trying to retrofit the single leg pricing on paper tickets as they have done with the proper Oval stations. The off-peak day single (CDS) appears to have been reduced to half the off-peak day return (DDR) and correctly says that it is not valid in either morning or afternoon peaks. The POP fare says NOT FOR TRAVEL because it is informational, but I agree that it’s strange that the time restriction is just the morning peak.

Finally, if the Southeastern website will sell a single ticket at £3.75 against an itinerary using the 1731 departure then I’d buy it. I’m sure it’s not supposed to, but they can hardly complain if you are using a ticket from an accredited seller in accordance with the requested itinerary. I’m off to do some digging.
