    Hey all,

I regularly travel between Cookham (GWR) to Canary Wharf via zone 1. Prior to the March increase, the peak contactless single fare was £18.00, but it’s now up 13% to £20.40. Bizarrely travelling peak both ways triggers daily capping below price of 2 singles, at £39.40 total. Booking the same peak journey via GWR is £19.80 single /£37.40 return on the new fares.

In contrast travelling from Maidenhead, which is 2 stops closer (and reachable on Elizabeth line as well as GWR). New contactless fare is £17.50 single (up 3.5% from £16.90) and £35 return at peak times. GWR return is £35.10, so that makes more sense.

I have always used contactless because my travel is quite erratic, and the contactless fares used to be aligned with GWR, but it feels like they are penalising heavily for using the GWR service to Cookham on contactless.

    Hi Tony,

PAYG fares from Iver and beyond are all set by GWR. It does appear that something may have gone wrong here. Do you have any journey history from before and after the fares change to demonstrate what is happening? You may need to contact GWR and ask them why it’s gone up so much.

As for the daily cap, that is something which is very opaque and I’m still trying to get to the bottom of how it is applied. It looks like the combination of a zonal cap (eg 1-6) plus extension fares has lowered it from what was expected.

    Thanks Mike,

I didn’t know GWR set the fares out my way directly, but I’ve got journey history, so I’ll take it up with them. I worked out yesterday that I can “fix” it by using GWR to Paddington and swapping cards to avoid OSI. That reverts the fare to what I would expect. So it looks like the full fare is an error as you say. Will let you know what GWR say!

Do you normally use GWR to Paddington, or Elizabeth line for a through journey to Canary Wharf? If you use the latter, does it help if you swap cards at Maidenhead?
