I have an Oyster card which nowadays I only use on the rare occasions when I need to travel outside the hours permitted by my Freedom Pass. This happened last Monday when I needed to travel from Greenwich to Abbey Wood before 9.30am. My journey history shows £10.40 deducted when tapping in at Greenwich at 8.19am then £6.80 being credited when I tapped out at Abbey Wood at 8.51am resulting in a correct payment of £3.60 for the journey. But where does the figure of £10.40 come from? Thank you if you can answer this. I have tried looking for an answer but just got myself confused about minimum charges and maximum charges.

    Hi Gary,

£10.40 is the incomplete journey charge at peak times which is deducted to disuade against not touching out. As you saw, it is adjusted if you do touch out.

The incomplete journey fare seems remarkably low. Isn’t there a temptation not to tap out if the fare is greater than £10.40, especially as the Oyster card would pass an in train inspection?

Within zones 1-6 (and possibly 9 as well) the incomplete journey charge is a zone 1-6 mixed mode fare. This covers most journeys that Oyster is used for. Repeated incomplete journeys are likely to trigger investigations. If your touch in is at a remote location (ie Gatwick) then the incomplete journey charge is higher.
