ParticipantIn line with other TOCs, the London-bound evening peak fares are charged as off peak to all zones for the new Project Oval stations. However the existing contactless/ Oyster rail stations on GTR still charge the peak fare between 16.00 and 19.00 other than to zone 1.
Examples of fares with tap in 16.00-19.00:
To Clapham Junction: Ashtead £4.40; Epsom £6.40
To W. Hampstead TL: Luton £8.10; Luton Airport Pky £15.30 (What’s even weirder is that the off peak fare from Luton is cheaper than the off peak fare from Luton AP and Harpenden)
To Finsbury Pk: Welwyn North £7.40; Welwyn Garden City £10.80 (and the off peak fare from Welwyn N is cheaper than the off peak fare from Welwyn GC and Hatfield)I can only assume these changes have been rushed in and the existing stations will be adjusted down at the next update so the government’s fare freeze isn’t broken

ParticipantI’m afraid I’m confused. You say they ‘still’ charge the peak fares which implies nothing has changed. Yet you expect this to be changed so the government promise that nothing has changed isn’t broken.
What am I missing?

ParticipantTo clarify:
What’s changed is the extension of contactless to 20 new stations. The new Project Oval stations only charge peak fares 06.30-09.30 for stations towards London.
The legacy stations that have had contactless for a while continue to charge peak fares 06.30-09.30 (all zones) AND 16.00-19.00 (except for journeys to zone 1). The result is that in the evening peak a journey to eg a zone 2 station is cheaper from farther away. So it’s cheaper to zone 2 from Luton than from Luton Airport Parkway despite Luton being farther a stop further from zone 2.
So to overcome this anomaly I am hoping thr DfT / TfL bring the legacy GTR stations into line with other parts of London where the London-bound evening peak is charged at off peak for both the old and new contactless stations.17/12/2025 at 03:53 #8589Mike (admin)
KeymasterHi Adam,
Have you looked at evening peak fares from Reigate, or between East Grinstead and Woldingham?
The whole thing is a bit of a mess. The reason Dorking is different to Reigate is because SWR set the fares from there even though half the trains are Southern.

ParticipantNorth of the river is the worst. I travelled Potters bar to Hatfield yesterday and used an e-ticket potters bar to Welwyn N and saved 25%. It needs sorting quickly or people will lose confidence
