ParticipantThought I would raise this anomaly as it still exist even it doesn’t impact myself anymore as I have switched Elizabeth Line.
My local station is Surrey Quays and my office since 2022 is close to City Thameslink. Before Crossrail opens, my commute was Surrey Quays -LO- Canada Water -LU- London Bridge -TL- City Thameslink. What I noticed when I paid (and still the case on the current fare finder), a NR-TfL fare has been charged, which is different to a Rotherhithe / Canada Water – City Thameslink Fare, where only a TfL fare exist. It definitely doesn’t make sense when both Rotherhithe and Surrey Quays involve a single stop journey on LO to Canada Water.
With Lizzy line, it no longer impacts me as I change at Whitechapel and Farringdon instead.
Is this a bug or a long standing feature?

KeymasterHi Horace,
I think this one is probably down to the close proximity of Surrey Quays to New Cross/New Cross Gate. Going that way you don’t need to go down to the Jubilee line and back up at London Bridge which is quite a walk.

ParticipantI’d have thought that the tapping out of London Bridge LU and tapping in at London Bridge NR would tell the fare system that you didn’t go via New Cross/Gate – just as tapping the pink reader at Canada Water would.

ModeratorYes, I can’t argue with that, Si.

ParticipantChanging at a terminal station normally seems to carry a price premium so perhaps that comes into play in the charging choice.

ParticipantLooking at the TfL fare finder, there are now three entries for Farringdon.
Farringdon LU
Farringdon EL
Farringdon NRAll three show the default fare as being LU mode, but change at London Bridge (it assumes you’re travelling via New Cross Gate) as mixed mode when as far as I’m aware Thameslink between London Bridge/Elephant & Castle and Kentish Town NR is on the LU fare scale?
I use Forest Hill further down the line and I have to use the pink reader at Whitechapel (or Canada Water) to get the LU fare to Farringdon which isn’t mentioned for Surrey Quays.

ModeratorHi Martin,
Thameslink on the LU scale does include London Bridge or Elephant & Castle to Kentish Town and Finsbury Park, but none of those options include London Bridge to New Cross Gate. That’s why you have to touch the pink reader at Whitechapel or Canada Water, or change betweek stations at Shadwell.

ParticipantHi Mike,
I was thinking of the OP travelling via London Bridge LU on the Jubilee which shouldn’t charge the mixed mode option using LU/TL.

ParticipantMartin,
That’s exactly what I meant. My previous option shouldn’t have involved a mixed mode fare as it’s entirely within the LO/LU/TL. My current mode is LO/EL and I get charged single mode without having to use validator. Luckily my commute is much easier with EL as my office is on the Farringdon exit side of Farringdon, so I don’t even need to walk along the long EL platform.
