If I am going to (say) Grays, where Oyster PAYG can be used but not my 60+ pass, I presume I can pay for an extension by topping up my 60+ card with some PAYG credit. I’m told, though, that I can’t link my senior railcard to my 60+ Oyster card. This means I can’t get my 1/3 off this way. Is this correct and how can I get the 1/3 off?

Sadly you can’t add anything to a 60+ Oyster card. It’s an off-peak season ticket, but because its validity sometimes depends on which train you use, the system can’t know when to use credit and when the ticket is valid.
When travelling beyond the validity of either a 60+ Oyster or a Freedom Pass you’ll need a paper or smart ticket from the boundary station. The train doesn’t need to call at that station. Sometimes a ticket from boundary of zone 6 to your destination will be better, particularly when there are more than one route that the train could take.

“An extension or other travel ticket must be purchased before travel to stations on these routes.” Isn’t an extension an Oyster extension?
Also, why does the TfL website give me the option to top up my 60+ card? What use is that if I need to get a non Oyster ticket to go outside the area of validity?

My understanding is that you can’t add credit to a 60+ Oyster card. I can’t personally verify this yet. I will flag up that you think the system may be allowing it.
If you touch in at Shenfield and travel to Stratford as an example, the system would need to use credit if your train was Greater Anglia, but not if it was an Elizabeth line service. The system has no way of knowing.
In this instance I think extension possibly relates to boundary of zone 6 tickets.

Regardless of what the website does or doesn’t seem to allow, the advice here is “You can’t add credit to your 60+ London Oyster photocard to pay as you go.”
As Mike says, the 60+ card is valid on the advertised services and you’ll need to buy another form of ticket for travelling with anyone else.

What I do is carry a regular Oyster card, and if I’m travelling on national rail, I use that card with my railcard discount added to it. I buy a ticket from the last station that’s in the tfl zone to the destination.
For example going to Reading, I bought a ticket using my railcard discount, from West Drayton to Reading. I boarded at Paddington, and my 60+ Oyster covers me for the tfl leg.
