ParticipantLast Saturday I hit a trap in the Oyster system at Oxford Circus. I travelled from Hackney Central to Oxford Circus, left the system for a short while, and reentered the system to travel to Willesden Green. I didn’t realise that there was an OSI between the exit gate and the entry gate at Oxford Circus, where a one-way system is permanently in place.
If I have a genuine need to break my journey there, how should I do that with my Oyster card?

KeymasterI take it that you aren’t complaining about being saved a complete single journey charge?
I’m not familiar with Oxford Circus. Is it just one entry and one exit gateline, or does the entry gateline also do exits? If the latter then you may be able to enter, exit and enter again. You could also touch on a bus, albeit with a charge, so I realise that that option won’t appeal to you. If you end up with a here to here journey, and two maximum fares, then the helpdesk will certainly resolve that.
The reason it is there is to assist passengers who want to interchange but end up at the exit area with nowhere else to go.

ParticipantUnfortunately it resulted in a pair of incomplete journey charge, because the time between the entry at Hackney and the exit at Willesden Green exceeded the maximum journey time, as the result of joining.
There are two concourses at Oxford Circus. One for exits 1-4 which are entry only, the other for exits 5-8 which are exit only, that meant I must exit at the concourse for exits 5-8 and enter at the other concourse.

KeymasterAh, I understand now. In which case, I don’t think there is a free way of breaking the OSI, unless you are going to cap anyway so a touch on a bus is effectively free. Have you managed to get a refund?
I think the number of people who exit and enter the station within 10 minutes after fulfilling their reason for going there is probably quite small.

ParticipantI agree with Michael it’s annoying, I have had this happen before at other stations when I have had to collect something from a shop and ended up with a circular journey same station exit. Customer services said it happens quite regularly, although it might be a small number it’s still annoying.
IMHO The system should be able to realise that it is two journeys and split the journey as part of backend processing. Though if there are multiple OSIs in the same journey that can get problematic for the system.
