I’m planning on going from Swindon to Hertford and in London will switch between paper and Oyster en route. I’m hoping to avoid going through the barriers with the paper ticket and am therefore looking into stations where I can just tap in on the platform. For Hertford East I gather that’s possible at Stratford on platforms 9/10. For Hertford North, does anyone happen to know about Highbury & Islington and Moorgate please?
I’m not entirely sure what you’re trying to achieve. Your train from Swindon may arrive at gated platforms at Paddington. However, last time I looked there were validators between the Underground and Great Northern platforms at Highbury & Islington. I don’t think there are any at Moorgate.
Thanks for your reply Mike. Sorry, my paper ticket from Swindon will be to a station beyond Paddington and probably Zones 1-2 (work is buying the ticket so I don’t know what exactly I’ll end up with). Thank you for confirming about Highbury & Islington. I’ve since found this video from September 2021 and it’s just about possible to see the Card Reader sign on the northern Victoria line platform.
Aha, that makes more sense then. One thing to bear in mind is that Stratford is zone 2/3 so if going to Hertford you’ll save a zone by starting there. There are also some validators on the Central line platforms at Stratford.

Probably too late now, but there are validators on the Great Northern platforms at Moorgate – near each entrance / exit point (or at least there were pre-pandemic!)
