ParticipantMike, the government have announced the go ahead for the next wave of contactless to Greater Anglia, GTR and Chiltern stations. The new paper ticket fares are already on the national rail and TOC websites. When are the contactless fares likely to be available on the single fare finder? Or this site?

KeymasterHi Adam,
TfL don’t usually make new fares available early, unless it’s the annual fare change in March. They may be constrained by what has been agreed with the DfT. The data will be loaded onto the live system on December 7th, but even that doesn’t necessarily mean that it will be on the fare finder. Unless something goes wrong I would expect the fares to be available by December 14th. I will be keeping a close eye because there should also be a resolution to the Walthamstow Central issue at the same time.

ParticipantFair enough. The new paper ticket fares are showing some very significant decreases in fares (Off peak, Hertford N – Stevenage single drops by 55%, London – Cambridge by 53%) and I assume the contactless fares will be similar or the same. It’s funny that the government publicity has focused on not fining people at Stansted rather than the fact that fares are coming down, especially for single journeys.
I’ve also seen some new split ticket opportunities to stations beyond the Oval zone.18/11/2025 at 12:01 #8526Mike (admin)
KeymasterCambridge? That isn’t part of this rollout?

ParticipantLooks like GN may have taken the opportunity to adjust some fares that pass through the new zone. Although it’s patchy so Hertford to Welwyn N is £6 while Hertford to Welwyn GC is £12.60 (or £7.10 with split tickets)

KeymasterHertford (North presumably) to Welwyn. Is the difference because there’s two ways to go and one is deemed more likely for North with the other winning for Garden City?

ParticipantNo, both via Stevenage. There’s a separate more expensive fare via Alexandra Palace (£9.10) and a contactless one

KeymasterThis is very confusing. There are no cpay fares for Hertford North to Welwyn Garden City, possibly because they are both in the existing pre-oval contactless area. Also, isn’t there an issue at Stevenage where you have to exit and re-enter to get between platform 0 and the rest of the station? Do Hertford North trains ever use other than platform 0?

ParticipantThe current contactless fares from Hertford N to WGC is £12.20 according to single fare finder. This would be via Alexandra Palace or Finsbury Pk. Most Hertford trains use the new platform 5 which has its own gates; some early morning / late evening ones use platform 1 or 4.

KeymasterInteresting. Annoyingly I thought it was platform 0 there, not 5, but hopefully my email to GTR won’t confuse them too much.
