I now have a disabled person railcard.

I only make occasional journeys in the oyster area, but I understand that it will save me some money to buy an oyster card.

My usual travel is on Govia/ Thameslink from ELS to West Hampstead Thameslink, St Pancras, Blackfriars. Where would be the best place to get the oyster and railcard linked. I did ask for help at ELS, but the person at the ticket office was vague at best.

Hi. I have added a few railcards to my Oyster card over the past few years and the best way is to go to an underground station like Blackfriars or King’s Cross and ask one of the station staff to add the railcard details to the Oyster card. They usually do this at at ticket machine

    Regards Andy

Yes, my understanding is that you need to go to an LU ticket office to have that done.

Go to any tube station and ask the staff there. All 3 stations you mention have a tube station in the vicinity but are in a separate location to the Thameslink station. At West Hampstead, turn right out the Thameslink station, past the Mildmay line station and cross the road to the Jubilee line station. At St Pancras turn right after the barriers exit St Oancras and cross the road to Kings Cross St Pancras tube station. At Blackfriars exit at the north end of the station and follow the corridors to the tube station

    Thanks, all very helpful.

Another problem. I have now bought an oyster card from a local newsagent. I tried to register the oyster card on my tfl account, trying on the website and the app and both say I need to use the oyster card before I can register it. So to travel using it and then wait 24 hours to register it. Does this mean I have to pay full price travel until the card is registered?

Also, the newsagent charged me £10, when I was expecting £7. Its definitely a standard oyster card, not a visitor one.

I don’t believe you need a web account for the Railcard discounts. You can register your Oyster on the web account after you’ve added the Disabled Railcard to your Oyster at a tube station and travelled with the discount enabled.

The fee for new standard Oyster cards increased to £10 a few months ago.

    More hassle!

I used my Oyster card for the first time. Travelled to Farringdon on Thameslink. Walked over to the tube station and asked the guy to add my railcard to the oyster.

He takes me over to the machine and says as my oyster isn’t registered it will ask me for more details. So I had to put in my post code and create a password. He adds the railcard details and all is good – so I think.
(I couldn’t register my Oyster card, because when I tried to register it said I had to use it first!)

The next day I try to add the Oyster card to my tfl go app. It asks for my oyster’s memorable word or date. I don’t have a memorable word. So I can’t add it. I phone the tfl helpline. The assistant asks when I bought the card and how did I load money on it, I check my banking app and give her the exact date. She says the date is wrong! She asks for the balance on the card, that’s wrong too! She asks where it was last used. Also wrong. She can see my Oyster card and she can see that the disabled railcard has been added to it, but she can’t help me get it on my app. So I can’t see the balance or check journey history online. She’s raised it to the tech team, up to 15 days for a response.

    What is causing all this?

    Hi Tracey,

This must be so frustrating. I believe there may be some issues with adding cards using TfL Go. Have you tried logging into the TfL website and adding the card there? I’ve certainly never had any problems adding a new card that way. It is correct that you need to have made a journey to be able to add the card to an account.

What I would suggest straight away is that you note down anything that was said when you had the railcard added. What was the password you had to set up? Was it the answer to a memorable question? Obviously don’t type those details on here, but you might need to remember them down the line.

Thanks for your help that worked! And having added it to my account on the website, it also shows on my app.

Shame the Tfl phone line couldn’t suggest that. Checking online, all my previous journey data is correct, so I don’t know why it failed the checks.

Interestingly, the journey I made into London on the same day I got the railcard added hasn’t been discounted, but the journey home has.

    Thanks for your help

Thanks for letting us know it worked. The discount can’t be retrospectively added, but it will change the cap that’s applied if you reach it, so the most you’d have paid for that day would be the discounted cap. Obviously not much consolation if you didn’t reach the cap, but it’ll definitely work from now on. Final point, whenever you renew the railcard you need to get the discount re-applied as it stops when the expiry date of your current card is reached.

Many thanks. I’ve diarised the date.
