I have an ancient Oyster card I’ve kept in my wallet for years for TFL travel. Recently I needed to claim back an incorrectly charged fare and decided to try and register the card through the TFL Go app. Unfortunately, it needs the 12-digit number on the back and after years of wallet friction the number is completely illegible! Is there any way to recover the number so I can register it?

Others here may know better but my suggestion would be to go to a visitor centre, or a staffed Underground/Liz station and check it on a ticket machine. If staff assistance is required to reveal the number you can ask someone for help.

Note – If it doesn’t have a capital ‘D’ in the bottom-left corner of the reverse side, it’s a first-gen card and won’t be compatible with TfL Go.
