ParticipantAccording to the TfL blurb when the Silvertown tunnel opens in April passengers will be able to cross the river and travel for free on two DLR routes.
Woolwich Arsenal to King George V and Cutty Sark to Island Gardens.Do we know how this will work?
I am sure I read somewhere that the fares for these journeys would be refunded which implied that passengers would initially be charged but be refunded after making that particular journey.I personally think that King George V will become a bit like Hatton Cross on the free Heathrow travel area so that if you travel from Bank to Woolwich Arsenal you’ll pay the normal fare for the journey unless you alight and tap out and back in at King George V.
Some shorter journeys it doesn’t make a difference anyway.
As for Cutty Sark to Island Gardens I assume here it’ll charge you as you enter one of these stations then refund when you leave the other. However it is TfL so I’m probably wrong and they’ll charge the full fare and refund the difference overnight.
Any thoughts?

ModeratorHi Chris,
I think the idea is to allow pedestrians to make the journeys across the river without paying. Thus it will only apply to journeys between the specific pairs of stations. You could get out and touch out/in to get a slightly cheaper fare on a longer journey, but it’s probably only worthwhile if one of the 4 stations is at one end of the overall journey.
I haven’t got any information on how it will work yet. I’m still awaiting information held up by the cyber security incident and we’ve got the March fares revision to come first.

ParticipantBoth routes have foot tunnels, and Woolwich has the ferry as well, so pedestrians can already make the journey across the river without paying.

ParticipantI see no one filled this in, so in case anyone still wondering, you touch in/out as normal and then once a week TFL does some batch calculation and refunds you all the journeys. Also to note its Greenwich to Island Gardens as long as Cutty Sark is shut.
Also the talk at the time was the freebie would last “for at least a year”. That year is nearly up, and as a regular user I wonder what will happen next. And if it is for just a year, what a weird one-off thing to do. Not that Im complaining. But weird.

KeymasterThanks for this. I did some testing ages ago, but never finished what I wanted to check as something came up.
As for the year nearly up – it’s been anounced that the facility will continue until May 26th, at least. That was covered in the fare revision post undwer latest news.
