I am looking at journey options between Stratford and Vauxhall, and thought about taking Greater Anglia to Tottenham Hale then the Victoria line to Vauxhall.
However, given that the fare finder does not give a single fare for this journey covering zones 1-3, how would the system respond to such a journey? (without lingering at Tottenham Hale – or touching on a bus – to break the OSI)

That’s a good question. When you touch out at Tottenham Hale NR you will be charged a zone 3 journey from Stratford. When you then touch in at TH LU and go to Vauxhall the system will change that to a zone 1-2 fare as per the default. The reverse direction is a bit more complicated. The Vauxhall to Tottenham Hale LU journey is zone 1-3 so that is what you’ll be charged on Oyster. It won’t reduce that when you end up at Stratford. If it’s an undiscounted adult Oyster card then it will make an adjustment overnight which will be credited to your card on a later journey within about 2 weeks. If you use contactless then it’ll automatically charge a zone 1-2 journey both ways because the end of day processing will see the whole journey as one.
That having been said, I think Central line to Oxford Circus then Victoria line is probably the fastest, and certainly most frequent, route you can take.

Via Highbury & Islington is about 1km longer than the route via Oxford Circus and isn’t as fast on top of that*. It therefore takes a little longer via H&I. You have two 15 minute train journey going via Highbury & Islington. Via Oxford Street it’s 20 minutes on the Central line and 7 on the Victoria line. There’s obvious the times to get to/between/from trains that I’ve not included, plus wait times will be higher on the Overground vs the Central line.
*30 minutes to do 16.2km (ave speed 32.4km/h), vs 27 minutes to do 15.3km (ave speed 34km/h)
PS: via Tottenham Hale is 10 minutes + 24 minutes. 34 minutes to do 22.4km (ave speed 39.5km/h) – it’s the fastest average speed, but, by far, the longest route, and so it takes the most time. It also has the least frequent leg (4tph heading north out of Stratford). But it’s not a silly route – it avoids changing at the busy and cramped stations that are H&I / Oxford Circus and it doesn’t take that much more time.
