Hi, I’ve read through the info, but I’m still confused, sorry! We are travelling the other way. 3 adults and 3 children (10, 8 & 7) want to travel from Watford Junction to Euston on the mainline train (20 mins journey) on Sat 10th Feb 24. Do I need to book tickets in advance or can we just turn up and either pay at the station, or can we use contactless? I have bought oyster cards for the adults but only topped up £10 each. I’ve read elsewhere that the children would go free but when I put the info into Trainline, it says only children under 5 travel free. It’s very confusing. Any help would be gratefully received, thank you.

Sorry for the delay. Accompanied children under 11 do travel free between Watford Junction and Euston, as per this map: https://content.tfl.gov.uk/free-travel-areas-without-oyster-adult-accompanying-map.pdf.
The adults can use either Oyster or contactless. No need to book tickets in advance.

I can confirm that accompanied children under 11 go free (we did the same journey with two under 11) and that you can pay with Oyster or contactless (we used both, as I had contactless on my phone and my wife had Oyster).
Regarding the cost, I can only say that a return peak-time trip from Euston to Watford, plus a couple of trips on the Overground, cost £15.70. Don’t ask me how that works because I never quite grasped the fare system.
cheers

As far as I am concerned, this journey can be paid using contactless pay as you go but due to the fact we will need to use this connection a few times, my question is, which cap applies for the journey from Watford Junction to London Euston? Watford Junction is out of the fare zones, so which cap covers it? If I travel to Euston and then within zone 1 and 2, would the same cap cover both travels to Watford Junction and travelling within the zones?
12/02/2024 at 16:27 #5383FeathersParticipantFrom Mike’s post on the previous page, the following is currently true of the cap for travel in the zones between Watford Junction and zone 1 but this will likely change next month when the annual fare increases are applied:
“The Anytime cap is £28.60 and the off-peak cap (after 0930 weekdays) is £21.30.“
