ParticipantI have a relative arriving at Heathrow T4 who requires to get to Heathrow T2/3 to catch a National Express coach. They have an Oyster card but it does not have any remaining credit on it. I understand it is free to travel between these two stations but does the Oyster card require to have credit on it to allow them to tap in ?

ModeratorHi Filofax,
It shouldn’t do. A negative balance would be a problem, but zero is OK.

ParticipantThis will trigger auto top-up if you have that set and you may not want to put credit onto the card.
Using the free paper transfer tickets dispensed from the machines by the barriers avoids any Oyster problems.

ParticipantThanks Mike and Paul. I’ll suggest a free paper is used for the journey (I didn’t know about this).

ModeratorWhilst Paul is correct, if the Oyster card has no credit, then it is very unlikely to have auto top-up set. You’d know if it was because it would add at least £10 as soon as the balance was below £20 at the start of a journey.

ParticipantI recently made the mistake of meeting family members who flew in from the Virgin Islands (where they live) via Barbados. I believed they was coming into terminal 3 but it was terminal 5. Not wanting to be stung for paying for two car parking fee’s, I got them to meet me at terminal 3. My uncle used his credit card, his wife’s card didn’t work. TFL staff suggested she got a blue & white free transfer ticket. His card wasn’t charged, as far as I’m aware.
If they have a Contactless credit card *(uk or non uk) then they can use that. Also, if they use the Elizabeth Line then there’s a free transfer ticket that can be acquired from TFL ticket machines. However, it’s a longer walk from the Liz via the moving walkway to the bus/coach.
I don’t know about the Piccadilly Line but I’m guessing the same applies with the free transfer ticket. Most definitely a Contactless credit card* should work too. This is closer to the bus/coach terminal.

ModeratorYes, you can circulate without paying between the terminals using either the Piccadilly line or the Elizabeth line/ Heathrow Express. Hatton Cross is also included on the Piccadilly line.
