Hi there, bit of a baffling one.

I recently travelled from Limehouse to Barking, off-peak, taking a DLR to Tower Gateway, walking to Fenchurch Street, and taking c2c to Barking. I used an Oyster card with a 16-25 railcard loaded.

The fare finder lists this as costing £1.55 for zones 2-4, with no indication of an alternative fare for travel via zone 1. (I believe both the DLR and c2c are charged at the “TfL” rate.) If the system nevertheless did charge me for zone 1-4 on the basis of my OSI in zone 1, I’d expect to pay £2.35.

Instead, the TfL Go app shows that I was charged… £1.95!? The fare table would imply that I have been charged for either a journey within zone 1, or a journey across two of the outer zones, neither of which makes much sense. Any idea what happened here?

Aha, I think I have a theory. The fare finder gives £1.95 for Limehouse to Tower Gateway, inexplicably 10p lower than the fare table would suggest for a Z1-2 journey; if, as I’ve read in other threads, the fare cannot go down following an OSI, that would explain it.

Yes, that’s half the story. The explanation for the lower fare can be found under Longer Reads. Certain short distance zone 1-2 journeys are charged as if just in zone 1. Tower Gateway to Limehouse DLR is one of those journeys.
