TfL has turned on the ability to collect online orders (top-ups and travelcards) on buses. At the moment it is in a test phase which means that it may not work if an issue is encountered.
Testing began on 1st September but had to be halted a few days later as there were some significant issues. It was restarted on 2nd October and so far there have been no problems. I’m aware of several people who have picked up top-ups on buses in the last week, including my son. If all goes well it is hoped to launch it properly at the end of this year.
How interesting – I tried this today and the top-up didn’t get credited. Maybe it’s been stopped again?

On the other hand, the new TfL Oyster app is very nice!
I wasn’t able to collect my PAYG from a bus reader today. Assuming there’s another technical issue?
There may be an issue, or they may have paused it temporarily. It’s not been officially started, but I felt it would be good to know that pickups might occur on a bus.
And my son picked up a top up on his bus again on Monday morning.
Just topped up my childrens’ cards and it now says on the website that you can collect on a bus
Thanks Nick, that’s good to know.
Not sure if this is a new thing, but noticed you can buy Bus+Tram passes from the website as well. Only full price, not the discount passes.
Hi Martin,
It makes sense now you can pick up orders on a bus. Not sure why the discounted one isn’t available though.
The Oyster helpline folk are now advising refunds can be picked up on buses and are advising of an approx half hour turn round between refund and collection. Worked for me today on the 404 in Coulsdon.
Hi Rob,
Yes, all refunds and top-ups can now be picked up on buses.
