Using smartcard on buses

Not sure if this is the right area to ask this so apologies if not.

If I load a travelcard e-ticket onto my Thameslink smartcard I can use it on TfL Oyster pads as if it were an Oyster travelcard. I know this to work on rail barriers.

Would this also work on TfL buses? I know all travelcards are valid on all buses and have shown paper tickets to the driver in the past, but would tapping my smartcard on the reader also register? I don’t want to try it and end up having to pay extra as I don’t have a travelcard to show.
