By happenstance I’ve stumbled on another anomaly on the Epsom line.

The old slogan that “Oyster is always cheaper” no longer seems to apply, even within zones 3 and 4.

My travel to and from work is irregular and fragmented so there isn’t often a pattern I can work from but I’ve recently done a number of return trips between Worcester Park and Wimbledon in peak hours. I’ve been using an SWR Touch card and that charges me the Oyster fare for my journeys (with a couple of potential advantages in that it uses train departure time rather then tap in time to base the fare on).

Two Oyster singles come to £3.80 yet I’ve just discovered I’ve been paying £3.70 for the recent journeys. Downloading my payment history shows I’ve been paying an Anytime Return fare.

Looking along the line (from WCP) it seems that Wimbledon is the only place where this happens. I haven’t checked Wimbledon from other places on the line to see if it’s more widespread.

Is this a surprise or has it been the case for a while and I never noticed?

    Hi Feathers,

It’s the same across the whole of zones 2-6 on late adopting NR routes. Any 2 zone fare.

The reason is that at every fares increase the PAYG single fares are increased by the standard amount with rounding to ensure a multiple of 10p. The paper return fares are also increased by the standard amount with rounding, but as the fares in question are twice as much the rounding is often less of an issue.

I’ll see if I can get in touch with someone who can flag it to appropriate people.

For the record (and anyone reading this in 2 years time), I meant to say £6.80 and £6.70 with the Oyster single being £3.40.
