There are a few exceptions to the general rule of touching in 06:30 – 09:30 and 16:00 – 19:00 weekdays being peak hours, namely:

    – Anywhere outside zone 1 to anywhere inside zone 1 doesn’t have an evening peak
    – Watford DC line northbound doesn’t have a morning peak, and southbound doesn’t have an evening peak
    – Eastbound journeys starting west of Iver doesn’t have an evening peak, regardless of where it ends
    – For the three premium routes, only Gatwick Express doesn’t have an evening peak into London
    – Although TfL-only journeys involving Heathrow and Zone 1 are set at the peak PAYG rate, they still follow the usual rules for peak / off-peak, for example, when National Railcard discount is applied.

Are the above a complete and accurate description on when peak fare doesn’t apply? What will be the rules for the contactless expansion this year?

    Hi Michael,

    The top 3 are correct.

Neither Gatwick Express nor Heathrow Express charge an off-peak fare at any time. They are railcard discountable, and you are correct that Gatwick does seem to allow the discount in the evening peak. That may be a mistake. HS1 is technically outside the zones which is why they don’t allow off-peak in the evening.

I don’t know what the arrangements will be for the new extensions of PAYG.
