I have just come across the following article in Time Out about using Contactless on Oyster barriers at more stations and issuing fewer tickets. https://www.timeout.com/uk/news/more-than-50-train-stations-across-southeast-england-are-going-contactless-070423

I wonder whether this is going to cause problems for holders of Oyster 60+ passes who need to buy extension tickets when we travel beyond Zone 6? If we touched out with a bank card, we would be wrongly charged.

    Hi Katherine,

Yes, you can’t mix travelcards (either on Oyster, or 60+ or Freedom Pass) with PAYG on contactless. I think they may well have to be very careful with the messaging.

This will be doubly complicated because the messaging will presumably come from the DfT who may not care an awful lot about the niceties of Oyster and the TfL charging mechanisms.

Indeed. We’ve already seen some reporting suggesting that pay as you go will be the cheapest method, which it isn’t guaranteed to be. The BBC even suggested the whole thing was starting the day of the announcement. I can certainly see lots of problems ahead.
