I’m sure I used to know how this worked but I think something may have changed. My daughter has been using an Oyster Card which was linked to my online account for managing top-ups but never registered as such. She has just bought a 16-25 Railcard so today we tried to get the discount added to the card. Found a helpful member of staff who took us to the machine, tapped the card and saw it wasn’t registered. He said it isn’t a problem as long as it is registered online within 2 days and I saw on the journey home that the discount had been applied. My daughter set a password and entered our postcode on the machine. Now if I look on the TfL website and follow the link to register the card it just takes me to the page to set up an account. If she sets up an account and adds the card will that register the card? Clearly it hadn’t been registered when I added it to my account. Will it be a problem that it was linked to another account?

    Hi Nick,

The system did change a while back because of GDPR concerns over the forms used in shops being returned to the central office. It’s now not possible to record registration on the card unless it is done when the card is purchased online and sent to you.

I’m fairly certain that the process of adding the card to an account is now the same as registering it, so I wonder if the card was actually registered before. I’m very certain that you can only attach a card to one account, so yes it will be a problem if she’s trying to add it to hers.

I think the best course of action here is to contact the helpdesk and ask them to double check everything. They may need you to be there at the same time if the card has to be uncoupled from your account. I hope they manage to sort it out.

Thanks Mike, I have just phoned the helpdesk and apparently everything is fine. Despite what the machine said, the card is registered to me. He said it could be an issue if she tried to add a Travelcard because it clearly isn’t on a card registered to her but as long as the photocard number on the Railcard agrees to what is on the Oyster (it does, we both double checked) there won’t be a problem. He could see the discount set on the card and said it won’t disappear after 2 days which is what we were told. He also said there is no way to transfer a card to another account, we would have to cancel that card for a refund and start again with a new card (and fee…).
