Rob Fitzmaurice
ParticipantHi Mike
I travel frequently all over London for work and always hit the daily cap for whatever zones I’ve used and often hit the weekly cap.
However I have a query regarding weekly cap. This week (starting from Monday), I hit Z1 – Z4 cap (£12.30), Z1-5 (14.60), Z1 – Z6 (15.60), Z1-Z6 (15.60) and on Friday I was charged Off Peak cap of £15.60 despite going to Brentwood (Z9) because I started journey after 9.30. I therefore kind of expected to only be charged £4.30 for my Z1-6 journeys today (weekly cap of £78) but was charged £15.60. Is this because of the trip to Brentwood despite being off peak, leads to a weekly cap of £111.30 or will I be refunded £11.30?
Many thanks
Rob

ModeratorHi Rob,
Although the off-peak cap for zones 1-9 is the same as for 1-6, the weekly caps are very different. I’d therefore expect you to be charged zone 7-9 extension fares relevant to the times of the journeys to/from Brentwood. However, they won’t account for £11.30 extra, unless you went there and back twice.
I’d be grateful if you could post your journey history for the week so I can try and work out what’s happened.

As you can see I get about a bit!

KeymasterHi Rob,
You do get about a bit.
I hadn’t realised you were using Oyster rather than contactless. This means that the weekly capping is applied during the overnight run through the back office. In your case this would have been last night, so you should have an appropriate refund applied next time you touch in with that card. I’d be interested to know what you actually get, on the basis that neither journey to/from Brentwood was actually charged because you’d reached the daily cap.

ParticipantHi Mike – received refund of £7.10 on touch in this morning which is a figure that I can’t make any sense of but better than nothing!

KeymasterI can. It’s £2.20 for the evening peak trip to Brentwood and £2.00 for the off-peak return trip later on. These are the TfL-LU fares for zones 7-9 which apply for extension fares on the EL between Harold Wood and Brentwood. You can see the fares by putting Moor Park to Amersham into the fare finder.
Hope that helps.

ParticipantThanks Mike – I’d looked at that as an option but in my early morning maths, I’d arrived at £7.30 expected refund (the £11 odd was hopeful) hence me not making sense of £7.10. Thanks for checking!

ParticipantNot a massive deal as my expenses are claimed back but despite years of using Oyster (it’s essentially how my job tracks me) it still throws up some odd things!

ParticipantFinal – irrelevant – question: how do I change my profile pic? Edit profile doesn’t seem to let me do it and the photo is of me and my ex from 6 years ago!
