Chris HeinParticipant
Just a tip here, please don’t use Trainline to buy national rail tickets due to their fees.
It seems that unless you are buying a walk up ticket for that day and paying using a debit card you will be charged a fee.
Which means all advance tickets are more expensive through trainline.
Use a train operating company site instead such as Southeastern or Avanti and buy the exact same tickets for the price that is stated on the national rail fares site with no hidden charges!Chris HeinParticipantI was wondering why it seemingly took so long to go one stop on the DLR and at first I thought maybe the time was off by an hour but then realised the post said 83 minutes.
I was at Stratford International DLR myself last week and they are doing works on the escalators so I took the lift up but if you do that the Oyster Validator is off to the side and I nearly missed it because someone was standing in my vision!
So I’m wondering if the OP left the station and went into Westfield then realised they hadn’t tapped out and went back to do it well within the time limit but it looks like a long journey time was taken otherwise.Chris HeinParticipantThanks Mike,
That does explain why I didn’t get it back.
Wonder why they changed it 🙁Chris
Chris HeinParticipantIt’s definitely quite a confusing issue and I can see why staff at national rail stations would also give mixed information as to sell an AAA 7-9 ticket they’d have to change their station to one in zones 7-9.
Just to clarify, if I bought online a TOD Travelcard from Amersham to Zones 1-6 AAA 7-9 I’d be able to pick it up from Slade Green, travel to Amersham, then go to Chesham, back to Epsom and then go to Dartford and board a 428 back to Slade Green without my ticket being eaten at the barriers (particularly Amersham)
I would normally use Oyster but with £5 off a ticket with Uber making the paper ticket £12 for the day it’s a bargain (and no max journey times to worry about as a bonus)
Chris
Chris HeinParticipantJust to add here that if you top up using the TfL Oyster App the minimum you can top up with is £10.
You can only do a minimum top up of £5 on the website for some reason.I actually find the lack of ability to be able to top up online with any value above £5 to be a nuisance as I feel it would make more sense to be able to top up £5.25 to cover a day cap on the buses and trams.
Chris
Chris HeinParticipantSpoke to TfL again and explained what happened and they refunded me back the £1.75 straight away.
Excellent customer service there.
All sorted 🙂
Chris HeinParticipantHi Mike,
I’ve been told to wait 48 hours as may get an automatic refund. Will contact them again tomorrow if not.
Chris
Chris HeinParticipantDidn’t end up doing the Overground from London Bridge in the end but I unfortunately have another fares issue that I’ll create a new thread for
Chris HeinParticipantIt’s showing as an actual charge at 11:55 and says Travel Charge for Monday 8th January on it.
I made a lot of bus journeys yesterday but looking at the TfL page the second £1.75 bus fare was at 13:22 yesterday.
I’ll keep an eye on it.
I must admit Contactless most certainly isn’t for me. I am cursed in some way with it and will always use Chip and Pin if I can (obviously not an option on TfL lol)
07/01/2024 at 18:49 in reply to: Travelling from Euston to Watford Junction for Harry Potter Studios #5303Chris HeinParticipantShouldn’t be too long before the new fares are announced. I’m sure they always used to change in January but it’s been March now for at least a couple of years for some reason.
Chris HeinParticipantBasically, it’s because the off peak cap is £14.90 for both zones 1-6 and 1-9.
However, if you travelled in the morning peak the peak cap for 1-9 is £21.20 but the peak cap for just zones 1-6 is still £14.90
A paper One Day Travelcard would need to have validity in all zones 1-9 to be valid at Epsom.
Chris HeinParticipantExpress Travel Card was indeed enabled on her phone.
I’ve since turned it offChris HeinParticipantI don’t think you can make this journey with contactless as I’m pretty sure Weybridge isn’t in any of TfLs zones 🙁
Chris HeinParticipantAlthough the pending amount has still not dropped off the account, because I have had to put a dispute in Monzo have refunded the £5.25 and when it does eventually drop off they’ll take back that £5.25 so I’m not any worse off but it does mean I can use those funds whilst TfL muck about!
Chris HeinParticipantThere seems to be some differing times depending on the transaction as a general rule the transaction drops off on the 8th day but can be 30 days for some types of payment.
Monzo have already told me that TfL payments take an extended time to drop off because they work differently to normal contactless payments and this can be up to 12 weeks!
I have had to dispute this pending transaction now to try and get it removed from my account.Fortunately for me it’s only £5.25 but I do wonder how many other people have been affected with larger amounts and haven’t noticed!
Chris HeinParticipantSadly it hasn’t dropped off my account yet 🙁
Chris HeinParticipantI did finally get to speak to someone at TfL who were remarkably unhelpful and told me that as it’s a pending transaction that I have to contact the bank.
Which I did and I had to raise a dispute over the £5.25 pending transaction.
The bank have said it will take a week to review the dispute and up to a further 12 weeks to resolve so if they agree with me then I’ll get the pending transaction reversed by 2nd February 2024!It’s obviously far too much hassle so as I said in my initial post I’ll be using Oyster from now on as clearly contactless has a few issues still 🙁
Chris HeinParticipantHi Mike,
Do you know who the best person to contact at TfL is about this?
The £5.25 is still showing on my account as pending.
Monzo have suggested raising this as a dispute but TfL will probably block the contactless card if I do thisChris HeinParticipantHi Mike,
As expected one of the two transactions has been correctly taken with the other remaining pending which will go back into the account next week at some pointI wonder how many people were affected by this glitch lol
Chris HeinParticipantMine also both still showing as pending (I used Oyster yesterday so no contactless to show for yesterday anyway) 🙂
Chris HeinParticipantMorning Mike,
I currently bank with Monzo and it’s using a debit MasterCard.
I haven’t yet contacted TfL or Monzo regarding the double transactions because I know from past experience that they have no interest unless the transaction actually goes through – so all the time it’s pending they won’t do anything. My previous issues were when I used Curve and NatWest cards and in every occasion bar one it was with an early morning journey.
I would find that the first bus trip was fine but if TfL chose to do the 10p authorisation while the bank was doing it’s daily maintenance then the second bus trip would fail because the NatWest would frequently decline the 10p authorisation during its downtime – this nearly got me stranded in Welling at 4.30am on a few occasions as my card was now not accepted for travel!
This was the main reason that I went back to using Oyster despite TfL pushing the use of contactless.Chris HeinParticipantA paper Travelcard has several advantages over the price cap.
It all depends on your travel needsIf you have a Network Railcard then at weekends the paper Travelcard attracts a 1/3 discount making it cheaper than the contactless/Oyster price cap.
There are no maximum journey time restrictions with a paper Travelcard which is great for enthusiasts.
However of course the peak version of the paper Travelcard is way more expensive than the PAYG cap.
Chris HeinParticipant£13.30 is the correct fare for this journey as you used the Elizabeth Line to get there.
£5.60 is the fare if you’d used the underground all the way and swapped to the Picadilly Line on your journey.
A good way to save more money on this trip would have been to get the Picadilly Line and split your journey at Hatton Cross – tap out and then come straight back in again.
As Hatton Cross is in the Heathrow Free travel zone so you would avoid the Heathrow premium and pay nothing for your trip from Hatton Cross to the terminals. So sadly, you’ve not been overcharged but remember that the £13.30 counts towards the daily cap so if you’re making a return trip you won’t pay more than £14.90 for the day.
Chris HeinParticipantThanks Mike,
Gotta love GDPR…Chris
Chris HeinParticipantSurprisingly, the refund didn’t go onto my Oyster card this morning as expected so I’ve emailed them back to find out when they’ll put it on
