Thanks Mike for the detailed explanation. I will call the helpdesk for a refund. Now I know what to look for in Waterloo station the next time I travel via it.

Chris, No I did not tap the reader at the top of the stairs. Did not know there was one. That must be why I got charged!

Do you have a direct link to your fares guide? I tried searching it on your website but I was not quite successful in locating it. A direct link would help!

Thank you, Luke, for the response! Do you have a direct link to the Plan A Journey results that shows £1.90 for a trip fro Shadwell to Upminster at 18:00 today?

Here is what I am seeing: https://tfl.gov.uk/plan-a-journey/results?InputFrom=Shadwell&FromId=1000202&InputTo=Upminster&ToId=1000242&Time=1800

The above link shows: 17:59 – 18:33 (34 mins) – £3.30 peak

Does this make sense to you? Am I doing something wrong here?
