ModeratorHi Emmet,
I’m 100% certain that the actual fare charging mechanism will understand today as a bank holiday. It’s frustrating that the journey planner doesn’t, but it is only informational.
Mike
ModeratorThanks for the update, glad you enjoyed the trip.
Mike
ModeratorYes, that’s correct. I agree it’s possibly a bit unfair, but that’s the way it works.
Mike
ModeratorOne thing to note is that the Broadgate entrance to Liverpool Street is actually linked to Moorgate station. I don’t see how they could charge different fares depending on which exit you use, so it looks like Liverpool Street and Moorgate are effectively linked for fares purposes.
Mike
ModeratorHi Chris,
Whatever you spent on buses will count towards the weekly bus cap. So if you’d already capped before taking a bus on Tuesday then it won’t count. If you only took two buses then the most it would count is £3.30 assuming they didn’t include a hopper fare.
Mike
ModeratorI’m inclined to agree. Let’s hope they can give you a more complete answer.
Mike
ModeratorHi Simon,
There is a possibility that there’s a separate database driving 60+ journey history. Have you tried calling the helpline?
Mike
ModeratorCheers Martin,
That’s disappointing, especially the poor spelling.
Mike
ModeratorHi Martin,
According to the 2017 FOI request, the end of peak grace period is 3 minutes, so after 1857 should be fine.
Mike
ModeratorOK, I’m not sure of the technicalities, but that should have been fine I would have said. I don’t think the gates at Liverpool Street LU are set up to accept e-tickets yet, so I would expect you to be let through. I think you should probably seek clarification from the ticket retailer and/or Great Northern.
Mike
ModeratorHi Adam,
Can I clarify, was it a paper ticket and were you asked to insert it into the gates? And which gates did you try to get through? My understanding is that the Broadgate exit gates are connected to Moorgate station.
Mike
ModeratorHi Martin,
Yes, that’s what I’d expect I think. New Cross Gate can’t include an interchange involving New Cross Gate so they will have looked at that separately.
Mike
ModeratorHarold Wood is within London zones 1-6.
If you ask for the ticket at any NR ticket office they will know what it is. It is also available at ticket machines which sell tickets from another station. Just start typing boundary in as the origin station and you’ll get it. You can also call any train company telesales and order it to be picked up at a station ticket machine.
The only place you can’t get it is websites at the moment.

ModeratorTfL Rail (soon to be rebranded as Elizabeth line) have been running the trains for quite a while between Paddington and Reading. The 60+ Oyster card is a London thing and TfL/the Mayor can’t justify extending it beyond London.
As I said, you can buy a ticket from boundary zone 6 to Reading. You can get that at Paddington and you can even use the combination on the fast GWR trains. Freedom Pass holders who can travel all the way to Reading are limited to the slow TfL trains.
Mike
ModeratorHi Mark,
60+ Oyster card users already cannot use the card beyond West Drayton. It’s nothing new. The 60+ Oyster card is effectively an off-peak season ticket, so it’s valid to buy a ticket from boundary of zone 6 to Reading and use that in conjunction with the 60+ Oyster.
Even when the full service is running on the whole line next year there won’t be 12 trains an hour to Reading.
Mike
ModeratorHi Tony,
It is frustrating when this happens. Most of the time it is worthwhile, but there are edge cases where it goes ‘wrong’. The good news is that you are free to use two cards if you want. You obviously lose the capping ability, but if you are just making one journey then it’s fine.
Other strategies that you can use are available. You can break the OSI by waiting 40 minutes at Paddington between touch out from the Underground and touch in on National Rail. You can also touch in on a bus and then get straight off. This costs £1.65 but avoids the wait.
You could also split at Ealing Broadway instead of Paddington which would be £3.60 peak plus £5.50 off-peak. You’d need to exit the station after getting off the Central Line and go straight back in. This one will also work when through Elizabeth line trains start running later in the year.
Hope this helps.
Mike
ModeratorI’m really not sure what is happening with fares. I’ve asked for clarification. The fares from Woolwich EL seem to be the same as those from Woolwich Arsenal, even mentioning things like changing at New Cross. This is ridiculous in my opinion. My hope is that there is a new fare table to be uploaded on May 24th.
Mike
ModeratorHi Roger,
Blue Oyster cards, contactless payment cards/devices, zip cards and Oyster Student/Apprentice/Job Centre photocards are all valid at Epsom. Freedom Passes and 60+ Oyster cards are not, unless it’s changed and no-one has told TfL or the London Councils. It would be interesting to hear what SWR have to say about the announcements.
Mike
ModeratorHi Adam,
The fares from late adopting National Rail stations are a mess. If you can use Thameslink core then they are all NR only, so I think Elizabeth line core ought to be the same. I’m not really sure what’s going on though.
Mike
ModeratorHi Kai,
The zone 1-6 cap is a daily one so avoiding the morning peak or Heathrow won’t make much difference. Romford is also in zone 6 so you may well cap every day.
As for Windsor, yes you can use contactless from the Central station, so you’re good to go.
Mike
ModeratorHi Kai,
Yes, that’s absolutely fine. Each card or device can only be used by one person, but there are no rules on who that person should be.

Mike
ModeratorSo they have! I’ve removed them too in that case. I wonder if that had anything to do with an email I sent earlier?
Mike
ModeratorHi,
£14.10 is the all modes daily cap for zones 1-6 which includes bus, tram, underground, dlr, and national rail. Note also that buses do not operate in zones (because the system doesn’t know where you’ve ended the journey) so any TfL bus will count towards whatever rail cap you reach.
Mike
ModeratorAs it happens I’ve just added the 3 new stations to my fare finder (Woolwich, Custom House and Canary Wharf). All the others have the same fares as the associated LU or NR station. There are definitely some errors which may or may not be resolved on May 24th. As it stands it’s a mess.
Mike
ModeratorThe expiry date is stored on the Oyster card, so no, you can’t share a card with a discount attached.
