    Hi Mike,

Fenchurch Street is the C2C terminus from Southend, but the stations are all very close together in that area. Neither Redhill nor Merstham are actually in zone 6, they are outside the zones but accept Oyster because they are on the way to Gatwick.

From those stations Oyster isn’t usually cheapest. You can’t load season tickets onto Oyster from Redhill or Merstham, so you’re better off using paper or the Key smartcard.

At the moment the Northern line is shut through London Bridge so you should either change at Blackfriars if using a Thameslink train or take a Southeastern train to Cannon Street if your train from Redhill terminates at London Bridge. From Blackfriars or Cannon Street take the District line to Tower Hill.

    Hope that helps a bit.

    Hi Andy,

If the travelcard is stored on the Oyster card then you should be able to persuade a staff member to add the discount without the gold record card because the evidence is already on the card.

However, 6 weeks without the record card to validate discounted National Rail tickets is unacceptable. I will make some enquiries.

Sorry, PAYG = Pay as you Go.

That can be an Oyster card or it could be contactless. You won’t need a travelcard unless you start making a lot of extra journeys.

OK, that’s just a simple journey on TfL scale fares so just use PAYG. The single fares are £3.00 peak and £2.60 off-peak. You should get off-peak on your morning journey as long as you touch in by 0630. The afternoon journey will be peak.

    Hi Grace,

It depends where you are coming from and whether you also need to use a bus. If you can provide your zone 6 station name I can answer.

    Hi Andy,

You need to wait 2 minutes at validators unless continuation exit is set, when it’s then 15 minutes.

What effect it would have depends on whether North Sheen is covered by your travelcard or not. If it is then it won’t be a problem. If not then you’ll technically have an unvalidated card until you get into your zones. This would only be an issue if you are checked by an inspector.

    Hi Chris,

Yes you can. You may need to be let through the gate if it’s before 0930 weekdays, but it’s valid on the trams after 0900.

Yes, there are lots of opportunities to reduce fares which extend beyond zones 1-6. The drawback is that you need to get off the train and touch out and back in again. At Finsbury Park you’re probably best to use the gates at the new Underground entrance.

    Hi Andy,

You are charged the lower of the two. In your case that’s (1) but if (2) worked out cheaper then that would be charged instead.

    Hi Gary,

I’ve no experience with foreign contactless cards. My understanding is that most will work.

On charging, yes you will only get one transaction per day. However, if your stay is for more than a couple of days then you might be better off using the Oyster and adding one topup to cover the several days caps. You can topup at the ticket machines at Heathrow so I don’t think the queues should be too long. If they are then maybe use the contactless card for the one journey into Central London and then top up the Oyster there.

If you can give me a few more details about the trip (dates, likely destinations/zones used, etc) I should be able to suggest an amount to add. Also please confirm whether it is a normal blue Oyster or a visitor Oyster card.

    Hi Kerry,

It is possible that the contactless system has been told to be generous in light of the industrial action currently taking place. My best suggestion is to link the contactless card or device to your TfL account because then you’ll be able to examine the journey history. You can get access without linking, but it’s only for a short window, while linked cards retain history for 12 months.

    Hi,

I’ve had a quick search to confirm but I can’t find it. You definitely can’t put travelcards on a visitor Oyster card so I’m pretty sure discounts are out as well.

Thanks for the update. Unfortunately I think this is probably a database error which may get picked up in the future, but enjoy it while it lasts.

Correct yes. You can’t be off-route when using PAYG as long as you don’t stray outside the relevant PAYG area or exceed the maximum journey time for your overall journey.

    Hi Micheal,

Yes, the default route is anything that doesn’t involve changing between stations for the Underground. You could change at Whitechapel and Farringdon as they can’t tell you’ve done that instead of via London Bridge.

    Thanks Felix,

Yes, the tube or national-rail split identified in the fare data gives a hint as to the farescale being used, but it’s not really useful because there are several variations of each scale. Hence I don’t show it.

    Hi Chris,

Given everything that’s been said I’m confident that it was an unfinished journey as you suggest.

    Hi Ben,

Have you received an email from me? If yes, please respond as I want to try and help get back some of the overcharges.

    Hi Ben,

I’ve been to Limehouse this evening and taken these two photos:

    Limehouse Gates Limehouse validators

The first one shows the gates. These are the exit gates from the National Rail station. It is confusing given the sign on the wall behind welcoming you to the DLR. The second one shows the validators at the other end of the link bridge.

So, use your c2c ticket to exit through the gates. If it doesn’t work you’ll need to show it to a member of staff and be let through the manual gate. Then touch your Oyster card on the validators to touch into the DLR station. At Westferry you should touch out on the validators there and it will charge the correct fare.

    Hi M,

Don’t worry if its not convenient. Getting to work is far more important.

    Hi Ben,

Can you copy a sample of journey history which shows these charges?

I think you must be touching out on the gates from the c2c station. If that is the case then you need to use your East Tilbury to Fenchurch Street ticket in those gates. The touch in for Limehouse DLR is likely to be validators, probably at the end of the link bridge.

Let me know if that makes sense.

Glad you got it sorted. It’s a mixture of experience, FOI and contacts.

    Hi,

My understanding is that where multiple routes exist the maximum journey time is the one which applies to the most zones involved. In this case that would be 2-1-2-3. As that is within zones 1-3 we use the top table on the Maximum Journey Times page. For a weekday that allows 110 minutes. Sadly you took 111 minutes.

Give the helpdesk a call and I’m sure they’ll refund the extra charges. If you make the journey again I’d suggest using the Jubilee line instead of the DLR as it’s likely to be slightly quicker.

Aha, that makes more sense then. One thing to bear in mind is that Stratford is zone 2/3 so if going to Hertford you’ll save a zone by starting there. There are also some validators on the Central line platforms at Stratford.

    Hi Alexander,

I’m not entirely sure what you’re trying to achieve. Your train from Swindon may arrive at gated platforms at Paddington. However, last time I looked there were validators between the Underground and Great Northern platforms at Highbury & Islington. I don’t think there are any at Moorgate.
