ModeratorHi Leslie,
You’ve basically got two options. You can use contactless PAYG, which will cap at the price of a weekly travelcard in any Monday to Sunday week. Or if you want to commit to a monthly or longer season ticket, you can get a Henley to zones 1-6 travelcard. This can be used either way round, but the outboundary station must be used as the origin.
There are two prices for season tickets from Henley; direct or via Reading. The via Reading option is significantly more expensive, but allows you to use fast trains from Paddington to Reading then heading back to Twyford.
If you use contactless, you can circulate via Reading without paying extra as long as you don’t leave the paid area at Reading.
Mike
ModeratorHi Ginger,
It won’t affect the weekly cap. On the day you go out to Golders Green, you’ll be charged 2x zone 3 singles which will probably result in the daily zone 1-3 cap being hit. It’ll still count towards the weekly zone 1-2 cap.
Feel free to copy your journey history here once the week has ended and I’ll check and explain how it’s done.
Mike
ModeratorI’m not aware of any such moves. You could contact TfL and make them aware of the issue.

ModeratorWell I’m having fun again today. Bought a travelcard from Brentwood including zones 7-9. Worked fine at Amersham and Chalfont & Latimer. Didn’t work at Chesham or Watford Met, code 77. At Watford High Street the small ticket machine told me it had an ITSO card on it with a travelcard, but the gates failed with code 57. Heading back into London now.

Mike
ModeratorHi Horace,
That’s an odd one. I’ll raise that as a potential error.
Mike
ModeratorYes you can.
Mike
ModeratorIt’s a limitation of Oyster, which won’t refund a previously charged fare earlier in the journey. If you’re using an adult Oyster, then it will refund the difference if there is one when the days touches are run through the back office overnight. Unfortunately, this doesn’t yet happen with zip cards or other discounted Oysters.
In this particular case, you wouldn’t be overcharged using an adult card as the zone 2 peak single is less than the zone 1-2 off-peak single. It’s only an issue for 11-15 zip cards because of the flat fare system.
Finally, if you wanted to save the 10p then you could change once at Waterloo.
Mike
ModeratorHi Duncan,
Looks like Greater Anglia have made a mistake as they set the fares to/from Broxbourne and beyond. Perhaps email their customer services and ask why?
Mike
ModeratorOK Duncan,
Firstly, I do not work for TfL. All the information I display comes from data supplied by them. Secondly, as I said in my original reply, I do not want to major on maximum fares. No-one should be aiming to make use of them and it could be very costly if they do.
It’s possible that London North Western Railway haven’t changed all the Watford Junction fares. They have history for making some changes at the second fares revision of the year.
The maximum fares for SE High Speed will be the same as the single prices.

ModeratorHackney Central and Hackney Downs are treated as one station for the purposes of PAYG charging. If interchanging between the two stations you only need to touch one pink reader.
Mike
ModeratorThanks for your perseverance Alan. You’ve just reminded me that I need to compose an email to GA myself. It’s been a busy few days.
Mike
ModeratorHi Duncan,
Not as far as I know. A rail journey in progress at 0430 will be completed on the day it started as long as maximum journey time isn’t exceeded.
Mike
ModeratorHi Duncan,
Yes it does. It must be stressed that the grace period is unadvertised for a reason. It is to reduce the number of complaints that the reader/system clock was wrong. People should not therefore rely on the extra time. It could also be changed at some point in the future without prior notice, because the contractual advertised times are as stated on the fare finder.
Mike
ModeratorHi Alan,
Greater Anglia are right that it should be valid throughout zones 1-9. I suspect that there is something wrong with the coding on the ticket. This may be down to GA or might be a problem for TfL/Cubic. Can you keep pushing this one?
I’ll draw this thread to the attention of my contact at TfL as well.
As a last resort trading standards may be interested if you can show them screenshot of the purchase process and video of it failing at other zone 7-9 stations.
There is no such instruction that TOCs can’t sell travelcards from outside the zones to include zones 7-9. Examples include Shenfield, Cheshunt, Broxbourne and Watford Junction.
Mike
ModeratorYes, you can circulate without paying between the terminals using either the Piccadilly line or the Elizabeth line/ Heathrow Express. Hatton Cross is also included on the Piccadilly line.
Mike
ModeratorThanks for your kind words. The forum software is quite basic compared to other dedicated products, but it integrates far better with the rest of the site. That’s not to say things won’t change, but it’s unlikely at the moment.
Mike
ModeratorI think you need to temper your expectations. Where Oyster is valid outside zones 1-6 it is rarely cheaper than alternative payment methods. The same is true for contactless PAYG. The technology behind Oyster is quite dated now and cannot be extended in it’s current form. PAYG fares from Medway will match traditional fares if/when it is extended. The only difference will be that singles will be half the return fare.
I’m sorry I have no information on bus services.

ModeratorHi Antony,
Oyster won’t be expanded beyond Dartford/Swanley, but contactless is rumoured to be going as far as Rainham.
Mike
ModeratorHi Nazar,
Have you read the Peak, Off-peak and Caps page on this site? Basically, the off-peak cap runs from 0930 until 0430 the next day. This includes any fares priced at the standard rate between 1600-1900.
Hope this helps.
16/02/2023 at 21:14 in reply to: Hackney – Shenfield: where should I touch out and in to reduce the fare? #4623Mike
ModeratorHi Michael,
You’ll need to re-check all this if travel is after 5th March.
Simplest fares are Hackney Central to Shenfield £9.10 and Shenfield to Brondesbury £4.45, total £13.55. You won’t get close to any of the caps by making two journeys both avoiding zone 1, apart from zones 1-9. That option involves splitting at Brentwood both ways and using a second discounted Oyster card. Zone 1-9 cap £9.30 plus £1.80 plus £1.15, total £12.25. It’s not the cheapest though.
The best I can find involves splitting at Manor Park which is helpfully zone 3/4. You would pay £2.00 plus £6.00 plus £2.40 plus £1.15, total £11.55. You can use one card because no caps are involved. The only other dual zoned station is Stratford but the total is £14.10. Any other split would inolve paying for a zone twice.
I imagine the places will be the same after March 5th, but the fares will be a little more.
Mike
ModeratorI think I get what you mean. Looking at the map it appears as though East Putney is slightly further from West Brompton than Clapham Junction. Trial and error on the fare finder says that you can travel from Canning Town via Stratford, Willesden Junction and West Brompton for the £1.60 off-peak fare, so I think that’s going to be the longest.
Interestingly this has shown up some errors in the data which probably date back to the creation of the zone 2/3 sausage around Stratford. All the stations from East India or Pudding Mill Lane round to Lewisham DLR also offer the option to travel via Stratford, but they all charge £1.70 off-peak because they think you go into zone 3. I seriously doubt anyone would use that route to get from Lewisham to Putney when you can travel via Denmark Hill for the NR zone 2 fare of £2.40 off-peak in considerably less time.
Mike
ModeratorI’ve raised an FOI request: https://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/number_of_people_interchanging_b
Mike
ModeratorHi Chris,
Good question. Stratford to Whitechapel would definitely exceed the maximum journey time via Clapham Junction, plus no-one would do it as it’s 1 stop on the EL. You are probably looking at an overground journey, but need to be careful that it’s not priced via Shoreditch.
Mike
ModeratorWhilst Paul is correct, if the Oyster card has no credit, then it is very unlikely to have auto top-up set. You’d know if it was because it would add at least £10 as soon as the balance was below £20 at the start of a journey.
Mike
ModeratorHi Filofax,
It shouldn’t do. A negative balance would be a problem, but zero is OK.
